My new Scrambler project....
« on: October 01, 2007, 12:42:11 PM »
Afer learning that i am a \"mudder\" and not a crawler and smoking most of my CJ\'s clutch on the MA trip.....

Enter Super Scrambler buildup...  picked up an 8 today, updates to follow  :-)

Current plans:

drive and have some fun with it in current condition, just needs brakes, probably some electrical gremlins to make legal. enjoy the hard top and hard doors.

Future plans:

V8 - donations accepted... AMC or Chevy please
full width floating D60s
37\"s
lots of tube steel.... yes it will be fully caged
tranny geared to hell so i can crawl with the best of em  8-)
572 single seat race buggy
573 Brolite '97 Ranger, '96 backup ranger
1997 ZJ 35's
2014 Ram 4500 Cummins 6 speed 4x4
48' enclosed trailer

sweet!  and after seeing your handy work on the 5 I can\'t wait to see the Scrambler.  If you need a half top bulkhead I know someone who has one for sale.

If that has a t176 tranny in it and you are staying with a standard why not go with a ford engine. The 302-351 bolt to the tranny as long as it has the butterfly pattern bell housing any of the standards that are that old have them, when I swaped in my motor it took about a day and only parts I had to buy was motor mounts (you can easly fab a set) a throw out bearing set up (less than $30) and a bell housing from a older ford with a 302/351 and a butterfly pattern for the tranny (I only paid $30 for it) with a chevy you have to swap out the engine and tranny. And the amc\'s are harder to find

sadly it does not have to original T176 in it, i dont know trannys just by looking at them but the guy told me its got a 3 speed and i dont even know what case...  didnt look like any of my D20\'s or D300\'s i have seen so i guess i got what i got.  i wanst conserned cause i had planed on swaping it out, but we will see where it goes,  thanks

also, i always thought AMC20\'s were smaller than D44\'s.  I understand the weaker 2piece shafts, but i remember looking at the third member and thinking it was massive compared to my 44 in the CJ... had the round cover so im assuming it was a 20.

stolen from pirate:
With one peice axles, the shafts and carriers are stronger than a dana 44 and will hold up good. The tubes are thin and can bend or spin in the housing. That can be cured too. They can be welded to the centersection and trussed. Search for something like \"amc 20 axle truss\".

but I still think that for about the same price as one piece shafts you can rebuild a 9\" or D44.

Sounds exciting smichael, I love Scramblers!!!!!

I can't wait to see what you do with it. If you need any welding, let me know.

That sounds pretty cool and after seeing you at work in MA I can\'t wait to see your handy work. I do have a few suggestions for you that have worked for me.

A wise man once told me to learn to wheel it stock, then slowly build as my needs require. Now I\'m not saying to wheel something older totally stock because from what I\'ve seen a stock CJ was at a disadvantage to a stock TJ. (this is NOT open for discussion because it\'s simply observation and not fact and has no relivance to this thread)

Anyhow, you might enjoy more of a challenge if you were to start with some 33\"s, a rear locker, and some minor gear reduction for better crawling. Then reward yourself with a slow build to bigger and more difficult trails. Remember, what you saw me doing in MA was on 31\'s with 2.5\" of lift. Paragon, RC and even MA offer every level of challenge!

i have wheeled enough stock, not going to waste money on 33\"s    :burnout1:

i might keep the 31\'s on it, but most likely will do the spring over and throw the 35\"s on it and leave it open diffs, then go to 37\" or 39\" locked when i build it for real.  that should keep me busy till the winter when it gets all torn up.

cora, thanks for the offer...i might need some help finding some descent tube steel prices closer to buffalo (where my garage is), my cage on my CJ is way over kill and really heavy out of black pipe, like to get thiner wall HREW or dream about some DOM.  (really going to be as low $ build as possible, or at least i say that now... i put way to much into that CJ)

not sure on the direction i want to go with the motor, my motor guy told me AMC or chevy he wants to do.  boo for autos   :-P

as for the grumble remark, i only herd half the story   :lol1:

haha.

Josh, one of the head guys at WNYO is a welder in buffalo. Aaron bought his YJ from him, and will have his contact info. He will know the best places for steel in Buffalo.

Did you check out how Dave ran his brake lines? You\'ll have to re-run yours when you spring over. His way works very well.

I agree with the 37\'s. It\'s no fun going down in tire size.
