Title: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: smichaelR22 on October 01, 2007, 12:42:11 PM
Afer learning that i am a \"mudder\" and not a crawler and smoking most of my CJ\'s clutch on the MA trip.....

Enter Super Scrambler buildup...  picked up an 8 today, updates to follow  :-)

Current plans:

drive and have some fun with it in current condition, just needs brakes, probably some electrical gremlins to make legal. enjoy the hard top and hard doors.

Future plans:

V8 - donations accepted... AMC or Chevy please
full width floating D60s
37\"s
lots of tube steel.... yes it will be fully caged
tranny geared to hell so i can crawl with the best of em  8-)

maybe before i ditch to stock drive train, ill do a spring over and borrow my 35\"s from the CJ while its sleeping this winter :)

i hear so much good and bad about spring over, i might just give it a shot and see for myself.

If that has a t176 tranny in it and you are staying with a standard why not go with a ford engine. The 302-351 bolt to the tranny as long as it has the butterfly pattern bell housing any of the standards that are that old have them, when I swaped in my motor it took about a day and only parts I had to buy was motor mounts (you can easly fab a set) a throw out bearing set up (less than $30) and a bell housing from a older ford with a 302/351 and a butterfly pattern for the tranny (I only paid $30 for it) with a chevy you have to swap out the engine and tranny. And the amc\'s are harder to find

sadly it does not have to original T176 in it, i dont know trannys just by looking at them but the guy told me its got a 3 speed and i dont even know what case...  didnt look like any of my D20\'s or D300\'s i have seen so i guess i got what i got.  i wanst conserned cause i had planed on swaping it out, but we will see where it goes,  thanks

also, i always thought AMC20\'s were smaller than D44\'s.  I understand the weaker 2piece shafts, but i remember looking at the third member and thinking it was massive compared to my 44 in the CJ... had the round cover so im assuming it was a 20.

stolen from pirate:
With one peice axles, the shafts and carriers are stronger than a dana 44 and will hold up good. The tubes are thin and can bend or spin in the housing. That can be cured too. They can be welded to the centersection and trussed. Search for something like \"amc 20 axle truss\".

but I still think that for about the same price as one piece shafts you can rebuild a 9\" or D44.

Sounds exciting smichael, I love Scramblers!!!!!

I can't wait to see what you do with it. If you need any welding, let me know.

That sounds pretty cool and after seeing you at work in MA I can\'t wait to see your handy work. I do have a few suggestions for you that have worked for me.

A wise man once told me to learn to wheel it stock, then slowly build as my needs require. Now I\'m not saying to wheel something older totally stock because from what I\'ve seen a stock CJ was at a disadvantage to a stock TJ. (this is NOT open for discussion because it\'s simply observation and not fact and has no relivance to this thread)

Anyhow, you might enjoy more of a challenge if you were to start with some 33\"s, a rear locker, and some minor gear reduction for better crawling. Then reward yourself with a slow build to bigger and more difficult trails. Remember, what you saw me doing in MA was on 31\'s with 2.5\" of lift. Paragon, RC and even MA offer every level of challenge!

Post by: smichaelR22 on October 03, 2007, 11:44:35 AM
i have wheeled enough stock, not going to waste money on 33\"s    :burnout1:

i might keep the 31\'s on it, but most likely will do the spring over and throw the 35\"s on it and leave it open diffs, then go to 37\" or 39\" locked when i build it for real.  that should keep me busy till the winter when it gets all torn up.

cora, thanks for the offer...i might need some help finding some descent tube steel prices closer to buffalo (where my garage is), my cage on my CJ is way over kill and really heavy out of black pipe, like to get thiner wall HREW or dream about some DOM.  (really going to be as low $ build as possible, or at least i say that now... i put way to much into that CJ)

not sure on the direction i want to go with the motor, my motor guy told me AMC or chevy he wants to do.  boo for autos   :-P

as for the grumble remark, i only herd half the story   :lol1:

haha.

Josh, one of the head guys at WNYO is a welder in buffalo. Aaron bought his YJ from him, and will have his contact info. He will know the best places for steel in Buffalo.

Did you check out how Dave ran his brake lines? You\'ll have to re-run yours when you spring over. His way works very well.

I agree with the 37\'s. It\'s no fun going down in tire size.

Delivan is a long way to bring 20\' sticks of 1 3/4\"  lol

the brake lines probably will be the most expensve part of my quicky spring over...   i didnt get a chance to look at daves, but ill cross that bridge when i get there... dont know what condition the hard / flex lines are in on this truck yet, brakes are locked (i havent picked it up yet either :)   There is a descent kit on ebay that i have seen for spring over i might steal some ideas from.  id like to minimize canobolizing the spring perches on the D30 in the front, cause the disks/ nuckles, or possibly the whole axle will end up on the CJ eventually (4Wdrum and sick of it)

i bet it will look sick though with even 35\"s, dont see too many scramblers arround... none what im going to do to it...

but i will know better when i start to tear into it this weekend, dont know how reliable the I6 in it is or what condition the electrics and such are in.  I always like a fresh project with all the goodies and hackjobs from prevous owners to find!

got a better look at the frame,  i think the bodys going to have to come off for some love from the grinder and mig even before i put in on the road for some fun.  was hoping to hold off till i really tear into it for the drive train swap, but still excited and happy about it...

well that was a trip and a half....

lets try getting a CJ8 up on a car hauler that does run and the brakes are locked almost solid where two grown men cant budge it in neutral.

that was fun, lots of ratch straping and using the starter motor to drive on to the trailer in gear.... and then using the truck to slam on the brakes to get it to jump foward the last few feet... not an osha approved procedure needless to say.

anyways, shes home and a little tinkering and bypass of a rotted fuel line (or empty tank), she fired right up and I backed it into the garage  :-)

the tail gate and bed is in alot better condition than i thought, the sides and fenders will need some work.  inside under the carpet looks fresh and no rot, and other than the CB dangeling on the floor... i could not find a light or switch that does not work.... i was amazed, a radio and 2 speed wipers!... and squirters... its like a caddy compared to the CJ lol

pushed the brakes, and on the 3rd pump fluid blasted out in the rear somewhere... no worrys though.

tomorrow, hope to jack her up and pop the tires and see how bad the frame really is and weather or not ill have to pull the tub to do the work yet (im thinking yes).

springs look usable for a spring over, but shackles / shackle mounts look beat.  behind the seats are all kinds of goodies and spair parts i havent looked at yet either.

well i work pretty much straight through the weekends other than some family stuff that usually pops up.  But i can only work in it weekends cause its in my moms garage in buffalo where most of my heavy tools still are.

I was thinkin about trying to get it back together and titled for the WP run at the end of the month, but i have alot of work to do... if i can do the front spring over, fab a new droped steering link, pull the tub, blast the frame, paint the frame, new brake lines, fix some body rot in the floor, remount the tub, bleed the brakes out and get the back up lights working i should be good to go.... sounds ambitous for 2 weekends though...

have to ebay a new tank and sender too...

project cost so far:

$1325 for truck
$50 Uhaul trailer :(
$80 calipers, pads, wheel cylinders, springs, shoes

just the blue one, im kicking myself i didnt, but 3 trucks was enough for me now.  it only went for 500$ and had some good parts on it, but was in alot worse shape too.

nice build, did you do all the work yourself?  Im still toying with a full resto like my CJ5, not sure yet.  gona get it lifted and running for a winter jeep right now.

I did everything myself in about 3 months total. It sat in a farmers field for 12 years before I picked it up.

Chevy 350/Turbo 350/Dana 20
Dana 44 locked/ Ford 9\" spool
4.10\'s
Bobbed approx 20\"
Boatsided
Aluminium removable floors
36\" sx\'s
Dodge Dakota 40/20/40 front seat to fit 3 people

The list goes on.

I\'m hoping to start the winter teardown soon, to make another bunch of updates.

If you need pics of any areas, just let me know.

My brotherinlaw is trying to talk me into to taking a free 79-81ish Ford250 with a 460, C6 tranny (dont know the Tcase), D44 front, D60 rear, 3.55 gears.  motor in rebuildable condition suposeably, his buddy bought the truck for the plow riging on the front for 200$ and is junking the rest.

460 sounds like alot of motor.... and im not crazy about an auto, would have to regear axles, D44 with 460 and 39\"s? eek?

Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: wnyjpgy on October 10, 2007, 09:54:33 AM
I was actually looking for one of those for d44\'s the problem is that it\'s a  drivers side drop diff. If you want to run the d300 you would need to flip the case (which can be done) or retube one side of the housing.

I like the full width idea, I narrowed  my front housing to accept scout d44 shafts to keep  the tires somewhat under the body (my jeep is driven almost everyday on the street).

With that being said, I looked at a brown scrambler for sale outside of batavia last night, and I\'m currently working on the deal. If that one comes home it will be a similar build to your idea, d60/14bolt 40\'s, leaving it full length.

how much$ for the tank, and does it have a descent sending unit, i may be ebaying one this weekend if not.... funny how the first 15 gallons of gas to fill it costs as much as the freaking gas tank (less shipping)

scrambler is happy and sittin on 35\"s (borrowed from the CJ).  Spring over turned out really nice in the front and the truck looks well balanced.  i made new perches for the front with a built in 1\" lift since the front seemed to sit low in stock form.  I left the old perches on underneath, this D30 with disks may find its way to my CJ (4Wdrum) at a later date.

No pics till i get back to rochester though.....

I know you were thinking about going full width, I made the decision last night that I don\'t have the balls to do it.

I drive my scrambler on the street alot, (narrowed 44/eb9\")with that being said, I measured up a friends rig and here were my results.

Full width chevy is 69.5 \" (ford 69.25\") wide with a 12\" wide tire on a 8\" wide rim with a 3.75\" back spacing comes out to be 82.5\" outside tire to ouside tire.

I did the measurements off of my jeep, that equals 14\" of tire outside the body.

This is just food for thought. If you plan on trying to keep it street legal.

Nice quick build by the way.

once she is full width, dont plan on keeping in streetable...  workin on a 14bolt full floater rear (10.5\") and a dana 70 front....  if it comes though will be running 39.5\"s   :)

ripped all the brake lines out and got the front brakes done.  tomorrow finish plumbing, i take a look at the e-cable setup and see if i can borrow some parts from the CJ this winter...
Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....

just went through another full large jug of brake fluid

still takes 3 pumps to feel anything.

new:

hard / flex lines
wheelcyclinders
shoes
springs
calipers
pads
mastercylinder

i even read the book and made something to keep the little button on the proportioning valve from poping out like it says.  Im puzzled.  tomorrow, proporting valve is getting cut out and maybe get some dead ends to try and eliminated things / sections.  really frustrated right now.

i think i fixed the rear draging problem by just bolting tires up locking the brakes down and just burning what ever is dragging down with the motor in gear on stands.  good enough for now.

ick, lets see if i can get it insured

You are on the right track to isolate things.

3 suggestions:

- bench bleed the master cylinder before hooking things up.

- find a pressure bleeder (air over fluid).  I think that is the most thorough method.

- what about gravity bleeding?

Google it for instructions.

You\'ve got to have a trapped bubble in there somewhere.
Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: smichaelR22 on November 03, 2007, 04:59:05 PM
its a new master cyclinder, and i did bench bleed it before i put it in following the instructions.

ill have to investigate the other methods, for now i have given up and moved on.  someone said it might be cause i didnt put new rotors, that they are worn thinner on the edge and thicker near the hub, so untill the pads wear in to the same profile the calipers are just bending the pads in untill they contact.

other updates:

took her on a couple highway drives, motor has garbage for power but seems to run ok.  only have a few more feet of frame rail to blast down before making some repairs and painting it which i hope to do tonight.

i forgot to mention, to all who have complaned on many forums i have read about spring over being unsafe and a horrible thing to do to a vehicle...

You must be a bunch of babies driving new trailblazers or something, or did a hack job.

Im very happy with its road manners for a 26 year old vehical lifed 5\" on 35\" tires.  seems to hold fairly straight and stable on the road even at thruway speeds and the occational pot hole or curvy exit ramp.

had my first experience trying to cut glass, aparently i should have googled before i realized my failure... score only once!  trying to make the triangles for the doors, one of them was cracked....

new glass both sides!

also got a fresh first coat of mud on the scrambler... found that a D20 popping out of 4low sounds like and exlpoding drive shaft....not the most fun thing to hear the first time in 4x4.  i think i need to cut the holes in the tranny cover just a little bit more...

new ebrake cables in and they work!

tried a vacume hand pump bleeder, no change in petal...

going to take the calipers off tomorrow and try to bleed with the bleeders pointed to the sky, right now they appear to not be quite the highest point on the caliper (installed correct orientation though).

after having to read a book on how to get the calipers off without disconnecting the flex lines, i managed to bleed the calipers tiped with the bleeders just a little bit higher than they normally are and had great amounts of joy hearing the bubbly squirting noise on both sides!

system has no booster

im so excited! lol just gota get the back up lights working, and thing i make my first attempt at NYS inspection....

since im going for the least amount of cost :)  by chance i found a #1 pine in the #2 pile cause one of the corners was chipped so i got the 1\"x5\"x10\' plank for like 6$.... great for two 5\' rails...  used a round over bit for the outside corner, then a straight 1/4\" bit to cut the trim channel.  took some dark stain and a Q-tip to give the color, and lightly sanded off any over spill.  tonight i made the parts that bolt to the truck and hold the rails.  just gota get some more hardware and an hour or so more of daylight to get them mounted up.

just used pictures off ebay to get as close as i could to stock...

so i have been looking at tires again... do places like firestone or Goodyear laugh at you if you bring in 42\" tires?

Ebay 42\" IROKs (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4-14-42-16-5LT-Interco-IROK-Bias-Ply-Mud-Tires_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ66474QQihZ016QQitemZ260012508766QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)

Mr. NYS inspection says no go for rot in the frame above the axles... so i guess im hacking and welding tonight....

good thing i got my anual 3 harbor freight angle grinders today for $8.88 each :)

I\'ve had a trio of those grinders for at least 18 mos now, and a newer 4.5\" one too.  they\'ve not given me issue.  I like having cutting sanding and wire all at arm\'s reach.

whoo, she passed inspection.  and no more rot in the frame.  probably could have done a better job when i pull the tub in the spring, but its solid.

ya did the girl thing for 5 years or so... i figure im good free for another 5... she talked me into getting the CJ when it was in a heap.... so it wasnt all a loss...  maybe a house will slow me down in the near months... looked at 2 post lifts today on ebay    :) since i think i decided i just want to build a nice garage, with the house part just over it as a small detail...  :)

Anyways.... thinking about stealing the winch off the CJ tonight and mounting my highlift too.

en, cant decide where the hi lift should go... on the front, on the cage diagonally, on the cage horizontal... so many choices.  its nice to actually have room for once.  ill decide later.

some exhaust work and some patching of a small hole on the frame... the foot of really ugly stuff above both rear spring mounts i was in the mode of not taking pictures by then

my moms garage looks good with two CJs in it   (a little bit of red and orange peeking from the background in the one pic :-D )

mounted hi lift yesterday, and also called up the guy i bought it from and picked up a set of rear fender flares from him 40$.  Took the jeep over to show it off, he had mixed emotions and wished it was still his.  gave me a bunch of belts and some spair ujoints and new radiator hoses too, made it worth the drive.  Got home, gave the flares a bath and got them mounted, make the truck look alot better, more complete.

pretty close to complete for where i wanted to be for a winter jeep before the spring tear down and things start to get interesting :)

d@mn Jeeps with no headlight bell reminder... I have killed my battery 3 times since I bought it due to leaving the lights on at work.  Good thing I have a Yellow Top, it just keeps bouncing right back.

edit-
Yes I know I should have one.. it is just disconnected from when the doors were taken off.

ill never waste money on another yellow top, not worth it. i killed mine 3 times in the CJ, and then it didnt come back the fourth.... price has gone up 40$ since then....

900amp 60$ walmart battery just as happy

pulled the heater box out tonight and cleaned it out, some nice bee nests and mud. made some changes and ducted in the other blower i had.  Seems to be better but not as good as i hoped. i supose it could use a new alternator and water pump, but im not sure i care that much.
Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: smichaelR22 on December 09, 2007, 10:48:54 PM
after a few dead batterys, some jumps, a new battery, new alternator, and a second alternator from the CJ, she seems to be charging finally.  i guess autozone gave me a bad alternator, have to take it back or whatever.  also yesterday coolant decided to dump out so that required some new hose clamps and quite a mess.

thinking about taking free D60/D44 from an F250, build the truck, blow up the 44 and swap it later when i regear...  or i might bid on a D60/70 combo with 4.88\'s on ebay...

passed on the axles, 9\" difference in width too much for me to deal with.

Got a new 2ton cherry picker !

thinking im gona take the free 60/44 and start with those... also debating the 460 and C6..... not happy about autos but free is nice.

im more conserned about gears for crawling, ive never wheeled an auto.

streetable i think ill be fine with 42\"s with stock gears and no OD  :)

i could always throw the 460 and C6 infront of the 3 speed and D20  already in the scrambler which would make a 6:1 low Tcase :) awesome gears (but probably twist like a pretzal)

scrambler is parked nose out and in 4wheel low with its allweather cover already covered in snow tonight, i guess were supose to get between 16-20\"  im ready to play tomorrow.  cool!

New lift same color as the CJ.  cool!

entire brake system from master cyclendar to pads/shoes is new... except two short hard lines from master to reused p-valve (the only vertical lines in the truck that were in good shape).

having trouble getting my F250, going to try next week.... my last two paychecks are siting in the savings account... dont worry....waiting for a quote for 5 of my IROK\'s  :)

Looking good. I\'m interested to see if you think the effort of tire siping makes a noticable difference.
Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: smichaelR22 on January 11, 2008, 01:01:09 PM
im not really sure what the term siping means, im more hacking a new tread pattern and bring new life to the existing tread. inbetween the original lugs im probably only removing about 3/16\" because that gives me almost 1/2\" of tread lug and shouldnt weaken the carcuss too much...  bringing fresh corners to the existing lugs is about 1/2\" removal at the thickest parts
Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: MrMindless on January 13, 2008, 11:52:11 PM
siping is putting small grooves in large tread blocks to add more passages for water and more biting edges.  In soft compounds it can lead to chunking in the rocks but it aids in wet wether and winter driving tremendously.

With all the effort you\'re going through already I\'d see how they drive in the rain and sipe later if you need to.....
Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....

Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: smichaelR22 on January 26, 2008, 06:57:40 PM
not too bad, still had some bounce, not bad for a 1/4 ton? truck..... had probably closer to a half ton in it

there in descent shap, both are locked up brakes, but seem to be not rusted at all too badly where it counts.  he even gave me the front spring plates too, and the stering stabilizer on the front looks usable the way it is

Blasted all the mud and rust off the D60 front, painted it, and put new calipers/pads on.  Opened it up though and its full of gook and mud!!!, have to work on that when it gets warmer so i can clean and repack bearings/ new gear oil

ya i knew they were from a mud truck, and figured it was going to look pretty nasty, the gears look ok and had less backlash than my CJ\'s so a good cleaning and relube will be good for now until i decide to regear and do a full axle rebuild.

Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: smichaelR22 on February 04, 2008, 04:19:52 PM
a guy on ebay sells laser cut brackets that for 50$ i think are a descent deal based on steel prices  He made them to work with 3/4 ton front caliper/disks i think it was about a 220$ ad on, loosing about 40lbs off the rear (13.5\" drums i think).

not sure how an ebrake would work though now that i think about it to pass inspection....

14 bolt, new springs, and 44\"s are on the rear, i have some thinking to do to stuff the D60 under the front.  because the right spring sits on the carrier, i have to make new frame mounts for atleast the right side to out board the spring. Or, weld on a block to the carrier to bolt too... not sure how i want to do it...
Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: MrMindless on February 18, 2008, 10:15:27 PM
That height doens\'t look too bad.

Could always loose the leafs and link the front....  Remember if you outboard one spring you\'ve really got to to both to keep it balanced.
Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: smichaelR22 on February 18, 2008, 10:50:15 PM
ya i thought about that, its probably a similar amount of work to get it linked than to make 4 springs mounts solid to a soft frame.  but i have the springs and the steel, i dont have the coils and the heims..... :(

Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....

long night....

need to hook brakes up, need a drive shaft, and have to figure out the steering situation, and overhaul the front hubs / D60.  Made a steering arm for crossover and mounted it, dont think the box will hold up with just a longer link thrown on there.  Also, one of the spring hanger holes in the D60 carier is stripped and one has a coil already in it, and i should really get better ubolts in all four corners.... going to get the right stuff to retap the carrier with 3/4\" grade8\'s for next weekend.

its a monster:

Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: smichaelR22 on February 25, 2008, 12:50:55 PM
i drove it around the block, and it was kinda scary.  steering needs work, the springs are a little too flexy so it rolls around alot with no shocks or sway bar hooked up front.  gearing was actually as good if not better going from 2.73?3.05?\'s on 35\"s to 4.10\'s and 44\"s.  Low range FWD is blown in the Tcase, but i didnt need it.  also need to clean out the front diff if im going to use that for driving.  i had planned on cobbling a rear drive shaft to use for a few weeks until i got the new motor and tranny in where i would have proper shafts made.  but i got lucky with the old front shaft fits, so ill just leave it FWD with the 258 still for power.

is it normal a D30 pinnion ujoint is the same as a D60?

tires.... well feels like your on a coble stone road, i didnt get to 2nd.

to answer your question no, will be s10-ing.  i almost drove the CJ back cause it looks hot now with her tires back on  :)

lowered the truck 3\" front and rear, and added 2 leafs to the front.  Also did a ubolt conversion for the front D60 spring pad.  Starting to look like a wheelable truck.  hope to get another test drive in tomorrow after the steering is all hooked up and see how she does at higher speeds.

Post by: MrMindless on March 02, 2008, 08:44:21 PM
sorry to point this out twice but that high steer arm is on no way shape or form acceptable safe or unscary.

if your tires don\'t want to go where you\'re trying to point them that angle will twist like a pretzel before you know it, and how in the world have you made a standard tie rod end tie into it?

I do like the stance a LOT better though, keep up the rest of the good work.  and fix the ubolt like I mentioned.
Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: smichaelR22 on March 02, 2008, 09:58:42 PM
that peice of angle is really beefy.... i think the joint would fail, or my steering box would rip off before anything.... i have seen 1/2\" thick aluminum ones!!  the picture makes it look wimpy, but really i think its designed well, and the formed angle really helps.  i used the rod end i cut off from the left nuckle and rounded over the hunk of steel fused to the taper to use as a spacer- again i am pleased how it turned out.

i have had many comments on the steering, suprisingly more agree its fine.  besides going to a ligher, narrower tire, it should be less loading (on the street).

However because i need to remake both highsteer arms with extra clearance for the 7\" of backspacing by grinding down the calipers, and cuting the stock arms off the nuckles, im planning on making them out of 7/8\" steel plate (stage weight) if the hardness is good.  Also one of my tie ends has some slop in it so im looking at heavier duty ends or heims.  i have found 28k lbs static rated 3/4 joints for 21$ a piece on ebay, 9$ shipping for any quantity.

Post by: smichaelR22 on March 24, 2008, 11:26:44 AM
made new steering arms out of 1\" plate, got 1.5\"x .250\" DOM and ordered 3/4\" heims (rated at 28K lbs) for new steering.  Braced the front shackles so the front end is rock solid to the axle now.

took some time to get the CJ5 inspected this weekendwhich included: electrical gremlins from the winter, new wipers, 2 new headlights, rear brakes, right ebrake cable, and alternator install / rewire- passed NYS.

two girls look so happy :)

if those are \"the girls\" then the scrambler is more of a old carnie woman who you try not to stare at but she still scares the little kids

update:

made a conversion joint out of a 1350 (spun half down to a 1310 on the lathe) so rear drive shaft should be in soon.  started lining up the new steering arms and heims, looks like it should work out with some tweaking.  Took apart the front hubs on the D60, and cleaned, greased and got them working good.  Ordered an oil pan, aluminum intake, main studs, and head studs for the new motor.  Should be back from the machine shop this week.

one of my tires blew a leak where the PO cut to deep!

i decided to go drivetrain up on the jeep, and leave the body work till last... i think when i put the SBC in im just gona tear the tub off to make it easier for tranny mounts and address any frame issues.... new fenders or tube fenders a must, and probably 2-3 4x8 sheets of 16g is in order for the bed, floor and sides.... ill get too it, dont wory :)

what do you expect for now having almost 3 times $$ what i payed for the jeep originally now between the shackles and the concrete  :)

He has essentially a full floor for a CJ7.  I\'m sure if you needed front tub stuff the floor panels would work for you but I don\'t think the rear of the cab would work out in any way useful beyond expensive sheet metal....

gona do what i did to my CJ5, i had good luck with a 12$ HF gravity fed gun- and got a gallon of primer, gallon of color, hardners, thinners and body prep supplies all under 150$.  Was my first time doing a whole car and was pleased how it turned out and has held up well to what i have done to it.  Got the paint from paintforcars.com of ebay.  Only thing i need to investigate is etching primer on to bare metal?  CJ was glass....

Yellow steel is from the old hood that came on my CJ5.  it was windsheild smashed, and i figured the 40$ i might have been able to get for it, was probably less than what i would pay for some good steel, and it was perfect to use one of the corners to fix the scrams hood rot.

planing on hanging the new complete drivetrain between the frame rails tomorrow and tacking up some mounts.  Motor mostly together, new clutch / truck flywheel, starter, and fuel pump on so far.

Also decided to go 1350 yokes all around, the two new ones i need to swap from the case and front axle came in yesterday.

Hope to measure drive shafts tomorrow, and be closer to ready for the 4th.

busy weekend- got the motor running descent, a tank of gas through it so far.  She is a thristy girl.  chewed up a power steering belt and killed the battery from a tired alternator.  installed a new alternator, re routed a belt and adjusted the pump location- should be better.

going to try going up a size or four in jets tomorrow, got no fuel in 3rd or 4th gear when you lay into it.

only problem drivetrain wise i see, my pitman arm bolt is hitting my tie rod a little...

carchameleon hooked me up through fleet pride to get them done for close to as cost.  i think it was 525$ for front 1350 with CV, a rear 1350 no CV, and 4 ubolt kits.  We also had 2 CJ stock shafts shortened for 50$ each for tube and ballance, 10$ a joint install.  Im not sure what prices are if you dont do it though a garage.  Another place which i have herd good things about (even though he couldnt find my parts over the phone) is Cook Brothers.

we were trying to figure out smike\'s.  I think we came up with 10-12\" under his.

mine I really have no idea.  I need a stock Dakota to measure against.  I think it\'s something like 8\" but I have nothing stock that I modified (just all fabbed new), so I just have to measure hub to fender and compare, or ground to frame and subtract tire difference....

i answered your other thread about how i painted my CJ.  Scrambler is getting blue rustoluem- tried it out on the tailgate with promising results thining with acetone and an HF spray gun.  As soon as the rot is cut out from the body, it will be sprayed and i ordered some new decals too.

Title: Re: My new Scrambler project....
Post by: smichaelR22 on August 29, 2008, 10:55:26 PM
its tough call, the CJ is much more road friendly and a little better on gas.  The scrambler is still a trail beater that needs some better crawling gears and alot of work.  i love the wheelbase and 42\"s on the trail though.  Sadly the CJ has sat and is getting neglected.  It will probably be put away for winter soon.

Managed to get it trailered back home off pauls trailer, and now it has been sitting since, covered and waiting for attention.

i still am looking for doner scrambler / J trucks - and might spend my 10 days of Christmas vacation in the metal shop with a load of steel for a tubed / coiled CJ8.  up for thoughts- i have some time to plan.

decided im going to try and get the scrambler wheelable for the Nov15 Rausch trip.

Fixed the power steering line that broke so thats good.  Need to replace the low pressure side, the weldernator belt looks like its hitting it and wearing through.

Took a look at the frame, have some ideas for a fix before a new frame gets built.

also on the list is longer welding cables, with 42\" tires, 7\' cables barely reach the ground from the hood :)

didnt really cost me anything, i had the new box of plugs already in the glove box after i realized a chipped a few from installing the new headers a while back and had not gotten around to replacing them.  I also had the new plug wires that were under warranty also since mindless noticed i had a melted wire on one of the last rausch trips.  Starter motor was a duralast starter i had just bought in June and was warrantied for life.

its about 200$ a descent one from the reading i did when i was looking for my CJ5.

this was an ez swap since the box and vent system was there with a non leaking core.  i put a 250CFM marine blower in it that really blasts.... ran the wires and im done.

fixed-fixed?  or patched-kinda-fixed?

in other words should Erik bring his generator and welder and should we expect to spend part of Sunday putting large pieces of your truck back together?

that part is fixed,fixed- but as i was high lifting up from the rear, i noticed another rot spot over the same side rear shackle hanger that will probably go next, i ran out of day light to fix it.  i brought the steel, and was gona ask when the next wrenching night at eriks is and bring it out to work on it, or \"it\'l be fine\".

i still have to give the front end a look over and make sure the steering box is happy where it is now...

I\'d rather drag a broken frame that can steer off the trail than the other way around.
