CJ ton 5
« on: February 11, 2009, 02:41:02 PM »
well, i comitted to this crazy little idea of making the CJ5 into a class1 comp rig after picking up two 33\" MTR\'s and three more on the way tonight for a total cost of 140$ mounted.

the plan is to drop a few leafs and make some mods and get it siting on 33\"s for competition this year.

the list:

Mount 33\"s
pull add a leafs from all four corners
disk break swap on front (have parts)
power stearing swap (have parts)
LS swap to front axle (steal LS from Mike Wolf)
front ujoints
extend cage around tub corners / spreader bars
wheel spacers?
spotter?

I\'ll say it out loud here: this is awesome, and I think it will kick butt in class 1.  make sure your shocks are long enough for max travel with the softer springs :)  it might actually move a bit without the add a leafs.

+1 on the flex.

Smike - weld 2 u-bolts (welded together) onto the top of your front axle, use as a suck-down point with your winch.

scored 3 MTR\'s in really really good shape for 100$ tonight, so i got a total of 5, but i really want a 4th to match the really good 3 i got tonight, i didnt expect them to be so good for 100$

dont worry the CJ can flex like it use to:

that was when it had stock shackles and skyjacker softride springs.  i had so many shackle buckling problems even after moving spring mount locations several times, that i finally just put add leafs in all four corners to stiffen it up a bit.  they broke in and are tolerable, but for the comp i think she needs a tummy tuck and some flex put back into her.

at the time it just didnt dawn on me to put longer shackles in, and also i was happy with the ride height before.  Right now the jeep has leveled out a little, at first it was a bit tall with another 1\" lift from the 2\" longer shackles.

with 33\"s im thinking drop the add leafs and maybe another leaf and see what happens.

You can use my shop and the lift to make doing springs easier.

Smike - do you have a proportioning valve? What are you going to do now that you have disk, change anything?

yes i do have a proportioning valve, after i service the rear brakes now that i have an extra adjuster cable to replace the rear driver cable thats broke, i should beable to hold rear break adjustment.  since i have free lifetime rear shoes, a new set again (3rd set since frame off) should help.

if i have problems, i may ask josh for the proportioning valve thats on the scramblers frame which was set up for drum / disk, if there is a difference of the CJ\'s set up for drum drum.

my current thought it, its not going to need anything.

i do want to add a line lock to have a hydraulic Ebrake though.

i use the tranny for parking, more starting the engine on hills and helping with the lack of a 3rd foot, a line lock would be nice.
