Title: CJ ton 5
Post by: smichaelR22 on February 11, 2009, 02:41:02 PM
well, i comitted to this crazy little idea of making the CJ5 into a class1 comp rig after picking up two 33\" MTR\'s and three more on the way tonight for a total cost of 140$ mounted.

the plan is to drop a few leafs and make some mods and get it siting on 33\"s for competition this year.

the list:

Mount 33\"s
pull add a leafs from all four corners
disk break swap on front (have parts)
power stearing swap (have parts)
LS swap to front axle (steal LS from Mike Wolf)
front ujoints
extend cage around tub corners / spreader bars
wheel spacers?
spotter?

I\'ll say it out loud here: this is awesome, and I think it will kick butt in class 1.  make sure your shocks are long enough for max travel with the softer springs :)  it might actually move a bit without the add a leafs.

+1 on the flex.

Smike - weld 2 u-bolts (welded together) onto the top of your front axle, use as a suck-down point with your winch.

Who wants to spot?

scored 3 MTR\'s in really really good shape for 100$ tonight, so i got a total of 5, but i really want a 4th to match the really good 3 i got tonight, i didnt expect them to be so good for 100$

dont worry the CJ can flex like it use to:

ive never seen that thing flex like that. neat.
Title: Re: CJ5 to Comp Rig for 2009
Post by: smichaelR22 on February 12, 2009, 11:33:14 AM
that was when it had stock shackles and skyjacker softride springs.  i had so many shackle buckling problems even after moving spring mount locations several times, that i finally just put add leafs in all four corners to stiffen it up a bit.  they broke in and are tolerable, but for the comp i think she needs a tummy tuck and some flex put back into her.
Title: Re: CJ5 to Comp Rig for 2009
Post by: MrMindless on February 12, 2009, 11:38:37 AM
yup.

shackle inversion is an easy problem to solve.
Title: Re: CJ5 to Comp Rig for 2009
Post by: smichaelR22 on February 12, 2009, 11:42:38 AM
at the time it just didnt dawn on me to put longer shackles in, and also i was happy with the ride height before.  Right now the jeep has leveled out a little, at first it was a bit tall with another 1\" lift from the 2\" longer shackles.

with 33\"s im thinking drop the add leafs and maybe another leaf and see what happens.

You can use my shop and the lift to make doing springs easier.

Smike - do you have a proportioning valve? What are you going to do now that you have disk, change anything?
Title: Re: CJ5 to Comp Rig for 2009
Post by: smichaelR22 on February 16, 2009, 09:39:13 AM
yes i do have a proportioning valve, after i service the rear brakes now that i have an extra adjuster cable to replace the rear driver cable thats broke, i should beable to hold rear break adjustment.  since i have free lifetime rear shoes, a new set again (3rd set since frame off) should help.

if i have problems, i may ask josh for the proportioning valve thats on the scramblers frame which was set up for drum / disk, if there is a difference of the CJ\'s set up for drum drum.

my current thought it, its not going to need anything.

i do want to add a line lock to have a hydraulic Ebrake though.

i use the tranny for parking, more starting the engine on hills and helping with the lack of a 3rd foot, a line lock would be nice.

whats left:
gear swaps
heims / high steer

Proper redneck parlance there is, I think, \"front and rear rears done tore down\"

It was progress.  The gears in back will take a while with only the rough starting place.  Not sure if I\'ll have time to help again this week.  I forgot to throw INSTAfab back in my car this morning so I\'m out for tonight....

Last rausch trip blew driver hub (welded up on trail) and then blew the front gear set.  New set tomorrow via UPS, have to send old set back to get warranty.  hopefully it will be covered, if not owell.

need to insall new air filter on propane, might get it going for the meeting tonight.

got the new gear set in, took it to DTORP but didnt really wheel after watching 4 trucks wreck.  Havent sent the blown gear set in, CJ is on the trailer ready for the car show at work next week and then Rausch next weekend.  Next time it blows, its getting smallblocked, ton\'d and 42\'d.

so i have decided, i cant live with \"taking it easy\" anymore.

The CJ is getting ton\'d and 42\'d and eventually will end up a pained small block.

ordered the rest of my link bushings and other parts.

the plan is 4 link rear, 3 link front or 4 link front if i can pull it off and will be hung with 2.5\" airshocks, no coils or springs.

it will be as low as possible and alot of it cut off with mostly droop and no uptravel.  square driveshafts and full exo.  new dash and wiring. no plates or stickers anymore.

why should i bother paying for insurance or plates any more? its been over a year since its been legally driven on the road.  Anywhere i dont need a tow rig to get home, im bored with anyway.  when its done, ill start working on my street Toy on 33\"s to replace my 2wd s10.

can\'t drive it down the road to fill up the tank when at Rausch oops, propane.

can\'t drive it from farm to farm at WP oops, bored.

can\'t drive down trail 1 at Tellico oops, closed.

guess I\'m the one that fails here.  I still want to drive my pile on the road legally.

dont think so.   i have some drive shaft issues clearing a link in the front, and i have some fenders and some triming still to do so i was runing it 3-4\" higher than planed.  need to tube out the wheel wells to keep the fiberglass from slicing up my TSL\'s too.  Keith got a good shot today:

welded the front up last night, new lube.  Trused and adjusted the clutch linkage.  Made a hoop around the ram for some protection.

Bent up front lower links to clear driveshaft, but now i have crossmember clearance issues.  truck needs some triming, some exhaust work some tube work too, and brakes rerun in the front if i get to it.

Title: Re: CJ ton 5

dana300 is useless to me unless i write big checks to novak and find another 4\" in my driveline somewhere, but thanks.

i have 2 dana20\"s laying in the garage, but i miss my 205.  it should have been in there.

the old drivetrain will probably be up for sale and parted.  the T18 will definatly go up on ebay since they still go for 700-900$ like i paid.

planing to add oil to shocks and start really tuning the suspension.  need to mount center limit straps too.
Title: Re: CJ ton 5
Post by: smichaelR22 on September 01, 2009, 09:54:45 AM
just an update:

last few wheeling trips have gone well other than a puking radiator / cooling problem.  hopefully a flush and fill, new hoses not kinked and a clean radiator will help that.

Air shocks tuned with more oil, work great now.

double v pullie swaped to power steering mount for york install in the works.

short list for big dogs:

get cooling fixed (new fan controller)
get rear disk brakes on
add to cage.
get york mounted.
make a tool box
get a radio!
mount Nitrogen tank
