Winch Mount
« on: November 16, 2007, 05:14:00 PM »
So i have a 2001 GMC Jimmy. The front end is stock(no brushgaurds or bullbar) I have a 3000lb. winch that i bought but im not to confident that the bumber core will support it(could care less about the bumper cover, it\'s off half the time anyway)....any suggestions on how/ where to mount this would be great. Thanks

what are you planning on using the winch for?  a 3K winch will definitely not be enough to pull your truck out of the mud.  It is recommended to have a winch atleast 2-3 times the weight of your vehicle.  Mud can very easily multiply the force needed.  A 3K may be enough to pull a vehicle onto a trailer but not much more.

That was another concern of mine, im not to familiar with winches.  well the 3k was returned and im looking at an 8k now. Do you think that would be powerful enough?
as far as the mount i wanted to mount it on the front, i have seen the trailer hitch mounts but my truck doesnt have the hitch on it right now(bought it but never had the need to install it)  But those mounts were a thought that i had.

8K or 12K and a winch bumper would be best.  Eliminates all concerns that you would be having.  Also, think about purchasing a recovery set: snatch block, anchor, tree wraps, etc.

I am not saying purchase all at once, but should be on the burner somewhere.

my 10K lb harbor freight winch has never failed me, submerged twice, pulled the CJ dead through mud several times, pulled full size rigs out behind me....  $399 on sale, includes channel mount and fairlead.... 15% coupon i was out the door for like 370$

only complaint is the the handheld switch sometimes doesnt work till you tap it...

I have looked at harbour freight and i havent seen any 10k but im going to check their website... i think i have figured out the mount situation, my brother in a metal fabricator/ welder and i think im gunna have him custom make me a diamondplate front bumper with shackles and a mount.
o yea...all this is on the back burner right now, i got priorities to make the rig run like i want before any of that comes into play.  but thanks for all the help guys.  im sure i\'ll post in here again soon cuz im doing a custom exhaust and snorkel and any help there im more than likely gunna need.

Dude, you rock!

Are you planning on making your own snorkel? If so I had a few ideas that might be trick to try and making your own would save you some big $$. You may also want to consider making all or some of it detachable. It will save you off road, but for the daily driver, it\'s just something else bogging down air to the engine, and waiting to get stolen.

If your winch pulled ya outa that....im impressed and damn near sold on that one.
Scott, i dont know how familiar your are with the Jimmy/Blazer intake on the 4.3...it sucks, its open behind and underneath the left headlamp and it doesnt take much to suck in water which my MAF doesnt like...thats the only reason i wanna do the snorkel. im fabbin my own so im open to any and all suggestions.
it will be removeable, im just going to use an open airbox when im not drivin through the mud and water because as of now this is my daily driver...i\'ll keep ya posted on my progress(which will start pickin up now that winters here)
