Rotten Axle Brackets
« on: July 14, 2009, 05:34:16 PM »
I am currently in a pickle, the spring bracket on the front driver side of my 2003 TJ  has sheared off the axle. There is hardly any metal left on the bracket thanks to the salt. So re-using the bracket is out of the question.  I was going to take it into the shop thinking that it may be covered under the warranty I purchased with the vehicle. Turns out it is not cover due to the rust and all, now i have somewhat of a problem to deal with. I thought I could just buy the OEM brackets but the search for them proved futile. I did however find some custom brackets from a few sites selling \"bracket kits\". Since I have no experience with this I was hoping someone could impart some knowledge on me. So far the best solution I have come up with is remove the axle grind off the corrosion and brackets and install the ones from Clayton Off Road bracket kit, found here:

http://claytonoffroad.com/product_info.php?cPath=17_46&products_id=269

I am not sure but I think that his kit will work on a stocker like mine but I am not sure. I am almost thinking about buying a stronger and newer axle. If anyone has a bit of info to share please feel free. I am at my wits end after searching for a reasonably priced bracket kit.

Please help,

-Ethan

the Balistic kit that luvmyxj posted is what you\'d need, you don\'t (hopefully?) need to do new control arm brackets.  Talk to Ryan and see what he can do.

Thanks for all the input fellas!

I will probably purchase those brackets that luvmyxj posted earlier, they are very reasonably priced and considerably stronger than stock. I will talk to Ryan at BlueDogJeep.com today and get his 2 cents on the project and his possivle contribution. My cousin said he\'d weld them on for me, I just gotta get the axle out and haul it down to Harbor Creek, PA.

Ill start updating this thread with pics and my progress on the project.

dude you have issues.  time to hit the junkyards.  that whole axle is shot.  WOW.  As a test engineer that runs GM9540P and B117 accelerated corrosion tests on automotive components, i have never seen something like that before.

Good luck with that.

Lol, the axle is definitely shot, I thought that it might be repairable. I have been looking around for axles. Tomorrow I\'ll be calling several to get an idea of prices and what not. If anyone reading this knows of any, I\'m all ears.

I recently got the options report from a Jeep dealer the axle ratio in my TJ is 3.73:1.I am going to continue to look around, I did find one from a guy in Ithaca. Looks like it needs some work but it is a better deal than the junk yards have. So it looks like there is hope for the TJ after all.
