Where to Buy Cheep Paint?
« on: August 29, 2008, 09:01:31 AM »
So the cherokee i just bought is.....well......Purple

and I need to do something about it fast, as a co worker of mine just bought a new silverado in this wierd blue/purple color and i have been making fun of him for 2months about it.

...Karma is a bi*ch i guess...

so where can i get cheep paint? im going to try to wet sand it myself and i have a friend who will spray it for free for me, but i have to get the paint....any suggestions?

trail rig? or is this something you want to look descent for years and years after the sun and wheeling?

i did entire prep supplies, primer, color, and hardners on my CJ5 for less than 200$ total in a weekend.  I did it a bad time of year (march in a semi heated garage) and it was my first whole car.... after 2 years its got some chips and lost some of its neon pumpkin construction orange- but over all im very happy with it for what i put it through.  single stage enamel i think it is, no wet sanding garbage.  id definatly do it again for a jeep, not a showcar by far though.

nice!

i know nothing about painting so i was going to have my buddy do it, but i want to use cheep paint so i know he wont paint it if i use cheep paint.

so im looking at buying/borrowing a cheap gun and trying to do it in my garage i guess.

i was going to go ahead and start to wet sand the entire truck and then ill order the paint. id like to at least prime it as soon as possible but i figure i should order everything at once.

Smike, what do i Need to order? and how much of what

oh and smike, ill be driving it everyday to work, but also as a blue moon trail rig. ill be lifting it after i get the paint problem fixed.

any tips on making wetsanding faster?

the plan is to paint the truck dark gray and paint the flares, moldings, and wheels black. i think it would look nice

im no body or paint guy but why does it need to be wet sanded? take a fine wire wheel on an angle grinder and rough it up and get rid of any surface rot... shoot the primer right over it.  i was amazed at what 1 coat primer does, then 2 dry coats color, 2-3 thinner wet coats does.  i did mine with a 12$ gravity feed HF gun.  make sure you get the gravity feed, and not the ones with the bowls... they are useless and a hassel to clean if you wana re use it.

i got a gallon of color and primer. got half the primer left, and about a 1/3 of the color left painting a CJ. Get the recomended hardners and thinners like the site says.

i have no experience painting plastic- you might be better off with rattle can specifically for plyable plastics from an auto parts store for that...

my buddy that paints said to wet sand everything till it was dull looking.

ill probably just scuff it all up like you said and shoot the primer.

is there directions about how to mix everything?

i just use a green scruby to clean and scrach the surface before I paint, wet sanding is just more pro and allows for a smother first coat and less sanding later if you are after a show paint job.

they got a gun metal grey kit for 71$, get a jug of primer too.  that should get you started, and wont be too costly of a learning experience if it doesnt turn out great on your first shot.
