GMC Security Light
« on: October 17, 2012, 07:07:16 PM »
So the wife was driving the van today.  She started the van, it ran for 2 seconds then stopped. She noticed the Security light was flashing. Called the local repair guy we deal with he said turn key to on position, wait 10 min. then try.  It started.  He told her it needs to go to GMC dealership. She the dealer that the security light randomly flashes for a while then stops. Never caused us a problem.
After agreeing to diagnostics charges is informed they think its the after market remote start that has been there for years. They would like to disconnect to see if that's it, she balks.  Now they believe the starter motor needs to be replaced.

Never had a problem with the starter, not sure why the starter would make the security light flash when you are driving down the highway.

Anyone have any experience with this?  It sounds like its time to remove the "security" system.

Its a 2006 GMC Savana VAN with a Duramax Diesel.

Don't see how it could be the starter.

You have a transponder in the key. It is not communicating with the computer. Sounds like you may need a new key.

Girlfriends 02 grand am also did the same thing.  A starter, an entire column wiring harness, and lots of labor later  and I traded it in!

It's not white is it? Lol

It's white!

Can't believe it's the starter. No way. It's the transponder or something in the security system.

We get aaa calls for this all the time its terribly anoying.  I would assume complete removal of the gm system would do it but I do not know.   This problem spans many years.

I am in agreement with Ryan,  we had a company truck (GMC) had similar problem, and the chip had gone bad in the key, but the dealership tried many things before they came up with that.

We picked up the van. No repairs done. Its been running fine.  Researching ways to remove security "feature".

I have read multiple posts of people living with the random-wait-10-minutes then start vehicle in GM cars.

Also found http://newrockies.com/ . I found multiple positive posts, I am going to give it a try.

I bought gas tank skid for Jeep day before this happened, is the GMC jealous?

Driving the van to RC and back, the security light would flash for a while randomly.

I installed the bypass device from newrockies today and now there is no security light.  The instructions could of had more detail, but it was easy enough to do.  Now we just need to see if there is no problems of the long haul
