Ideal Cummins Tow Rig
« on: February 07, 2012, 06:06:50 PM »
Hey everyone,

If I were to get a Dodge Cummins what would you recommend? Not looking to make crazy horsepower, just want to tow my jeep/future buggy/camper. Also would like a quad cab to cart friends around in. lol I know a bunch of you guys tow with them am interested in hearing an expert's opinion on 24v vs 12v. Isn't there a block that has been know to crack? Thanks!

stay away from dodge autos

stay away from NV4500's if you plan to tow more that 50K in the life of the truck

the 12valves are a little easier to get power out of and more reliable in stock tuned form, but the 24 valves make better power and MPG with tuners easier.  They eat stock lift pumps yearly, although can come with the better 6 speed NV6500 rated for more torque.

The best 5.9 are the common rail 03+ trucks. Factory 325 hp 600lbs torque. No need for a tuner. The 6-speeds are tough and the cabs are nice.

They are more expensive but worth it.

Mike parroted what I said in person last night, and I'll second what Rywan said too.

And there you have it from the three club Cummins owners.

because you will get awesome at taking them in and out to change main bearings and main shafts, or to weld back on the fifth gear nut if you dont break the housing in half.

ask mike or nick their fun times with them.  the NV4500 will not hold behind a cummins even mildly tuned.  buying used, they are already rapped.
