up and died TJ.....
« on: February 03, 2012, 09:05:11 PM »
So I started my 98 tj (4.0L) up this morning no problems.  Turned it off to go back inside to grab something I forgot, and the rig did not start.  Lights good, battery good, fuses good(inside and under hood)  I only looked at it quickly tonight, but am looking for suggestions, ideas.  It will not even turn over.  Nothing....Any ideas  ???

does it click and kill the interior power?  could be loose or corroded battery terminals.  bad starter? try jumping starter?

First thing I alway check is whether there's power to the trigger wire when cranking. Then chase from there up the high or low amperage side as indicated...

If it doesn't kill accessory power when cranking good change it's the ignition switch.

no clicking.  Starter is only two years old, but its possible.  The dash lights go out when the key is turned over, but nothing.  I will try the other things in the morning.  Thanks guys.

if dash lights go out you have a power issue.  battery is shot, or connections to battery are bad and not able to hold high draw.

Yup. You should just loose the idiot lights, not everything...

You didn't say whether you tried a jump start...

Fixed.  Replaced the starter, checked all fuses again, wiggled some wires under the dash and presto...we have lift off.  The old starter tested positive, but it was replaced anyway.  The only thing I can figure is that thee may have been a loose wire on either the clutch interlock or the ignition kill switch.  Its running now, wew ill see for how long.  Thanks again guys for the help.
