Blown Rear End
« on: December 07, 2007, 07:39:34 PM »
So last week i was drivin through a parking lot and stopped on an ice patch...long story short, when i hit dry pavement the ring and pinion weren\'t ready for it...
so now im being pulled between replace ring and pinion with stock 3.42 or pullin the whole assy out and replacin the front and rear with dana setup and 3.73\'s...and rough prices on parts for my truck (2001 GMC Jimmy) for the dana setup (which im leanin toward) i cant get from any shops around here.  Im willing to come out to rochester to get parts if need be...any help or other suggestions would be great.
BTW...as of now this is my daily driver.

Talk to Eric.  He makes us some fabulous deals, I hear.

I bought my stuff from PORC a few months before Eric showed up here.  They\'re great folks to deal with too, with very good prices.

3.42 to 3.73 doesn\'t seem like much of a change.  That\'s less of a change than going from 4.10s to 4.56s.  Personally I\'d not bother spending the extra coin to change the front unless I was moving to at least 3.92s.  Depends on your uses I suppose but 9% isn\'t much.

That\'s 2500 to 2725 RPM, just to pick a cruising speed out of the air.  Something to think about.

Scott, what kinda parts does she want, she can have the whole empty axle assembly if she thinks she can make somethin cool with it.
the only reason i want to change the front too is because this is my daily driver...now atleast.  i was told by a buddy of mine that having dif. gear ratio\'s in the front and rear will mess with my truck on longer trips.

Having a different ratio in the front and rear won\'t only mess with your truck on long trips, it\'ll blow your entire drivetrain in less than .5 miles.

Assuming you are in 4x4 of course.

it would be like having 37s on one end and 33s on the other.  not so good....

Boy this sounds familiar, my rear diff just self destructed last month (at night, on the coldest night of the year of course). I managed to limp it home (disconnected the rear drive shaft and put it in 4wd), but it made really ugly noises all the way.  My problem is that I\'ve got 3.07 gears and would really like to switch to 4.10, but that involves replacing the carriers as well. It looks like I\'ll be off the trail a while until I can afford to do the whole shebang as we\'re going to have to get a bigger car for the wife and kids before we can fix the jeep.

thick ring gears are availible for many common setups... Then you can keep your current carriers.

alas, if that\'s the case for the dana 30 and 35, I\'ve not been able to find them. I\'ve been wanting to put in selectable lockers, etc for a while, so what I\'ll probably end up doing is buying parts as I can afford them and work on it piecemeal. Fortunately, I\'ve a spot I can just leave it in, so I can just turn it into a project...
