tj clutch problems
« on: November 15, 2011, 03:12:50 PM »
While I was backing my broken TJ off the trailer, I noticed the front drive shaft spinning. It is disconnected from the axle. It was in 4 lo and the tranny was in neutral. I could easily stop the drive shaft from rotating with my hand. The clutch pedal is soft and it still has fluid in it.

So is it time for this to come apart? Any help to diagnose what needs to be repaired would be appreciated

if your in 4 low rolling off a trailer with trans in N, front shaft should turn weather its attached to axle or not.

Let me rephrase, with the engine running, tranny in N, the transfer case in 4 low, the outputs to the transfer case rotate. As I would expect them to if they tranny was in gear.

While I was bound up in the rocks this weekend, I was unable to shift the transfer case or shift the tranny out of reverse until we got the front shaft disconnected. When I started the engine you could feel the jeep try to move backward with the clutch pedal pressed to the floor

outputs \"coasting\" with no load on them is pretty normal.

as for the bind - if you were loaded up when you broke it would make sense for the tcase to be unshiftable with load on both axles. release either end and then it would shift.  Trying to move with the clutch pressed in, on the other hand, doesn\'t sound like such a healthy or expected thing. That\'s got to be a clutch issue of some sort...

Curious if the shafts have full circle clips on the u-joints?  297 joints or 760 joints?

Although not installed yet, I have RCVs waiting to go in!  Thanks, though!
