XJ Drive line vibs
« on: April 27, 2011, 11:45:06 AM »
So ever since I put the new HD Leafs in my 99 XJ I\'ve noticed some drive line vibration. I\'ve replaced the U-Joints and no improvement. SO I\'m thinking I\'m going to tune the pinion angle. Looking at her rear end, the pinion seem to be pointing a bit high. This is most likely due to the over sized shackle.

So question, where in town can I get 2.5\" width shims so I can work on it this weekend. Looking for 2* and 4*

Thanks.

Too late, I ordered

3 degree shims to be here by Friday so I can give it a shot Saturday when the weather is nice. I\'ll try to remember to take some pictures, and write it up.

it takes a lot of lift to make the rear pinion out of whack on a XJ...
i would keep the investigation going..

did you actually measure the pinion angle?
do you have a SYE installed?
did you disco the front DS to eliminate the front axle as culprit?
i think your shims if that really is the case will be a band aid and only mask the problem..

just my .02 cents..

I\'ll take that advice, I was thinking about getting an angle gauge anyway, and I\'ll try the Front drive shaft removal.
Conversely removing the rear drive shaft after removing the front (and putting the front back on in 4WD) would complete the swap and really prove if its one or the other.

Oh and no I don\'t have an SYE

without an SYE you need to plug the hole in the tcase to remove the rear and drive with the front only.

Assuming it\'s an internal SY of course.  Some are external and what I said doesn\'t apply.

Since the rear output of the transfer case is a outie I pulled the rear shaft and drove around and it was smooth as glass. I measured the pinion vs the output and it was of by 3 degrees. Since my shims were 3s I put them in, no difference. SO its not the pinion angle I\'m hoping its not the output bearing on the transfercase.

Might be next on the \"start with the  cheapest fix\" list.
how much is a balance? Also will an out of balanced drive shaft vibration vary based upon engine load?

Not sure on either question.  Call Vic at Ontario Engine and Machine (OEM).  He\'ll answer both.

I\'m thinking that\'s they way I\'ll have to go.
After I get my new tires :)
Since the 242 is an outie, the hack and tap should be easy.

?
Is there an SYE kit that will fit the 242?
I thought the hack and tap was the only option for the 242.
