SYE and CV driveshaft or a slip on drive shaft?
« on: December 01, 2010, 11:13:58 AM »
I found this looking around ebay and I was wondering how people feel about it?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JEEP-CV-DRIVESHAFT-SYE-242-231-TRANSFER-CASE-CHEROKEE-/250722262305?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a60361d21

It is literally a drive shaft that slides onto the standard slip yoke found in my XJ, I was wondering how people feel about it or if they have any experience with something like this? This would eliminate the need to open my transfercase and put a SYE kit in, and save some money. Do you think this is a good alternative to a new CV drive shaft and a SYE kit? or should I open the transfercase and put in the SYE kit and CV driveshaft and not mess around with this \"slip\" on driveshaft? I have never heard of this before and I asked the seller and he claims it just slides onto the original output rear shaft coming out of the transfer case. what do ya think?

the slip yoke eliminator is designed to increase the overall strength of the output in comparison to the stock slip yoke, and when combined with a CV to help eliminate driveline vibrations resulting from a lift. in your case with the XJ its not an issue of needing to gain driveshaft length.

I guess it would depend on what your plans are for the JEEP.
Mild wheeling and Daily Driving = prob fine

Moderate-Hardcore wheeling = prob not

IMO the CV is alot of rotating mass on a slip yoke

The quality of the shaft looks great, and with a advertised lifetime warranty (lifetime of his business)its not a bad deal

id agree with erik.

That looks like a lot of mass flopping around for wheeling.  looks like a nice alternative to get rid of some road vibes though if thats your main consern.

hmm okay, thanks for the input, I think I am going to go with the SYE and new CV shaft, wont cost that much more, just a little more time...but probably the better way to go in the long run..

definitely better for wheeling - the other huge gain in elimination of the slip yoke is if you wreck your rear shaft you can remove it without emptying your tcase of all its lubricating goodness and tool around in front wheel drive without worry.  Can\'t do that with any internal slip yoke.

Good point Mindless.
Never having owned a xj or tj I\'ve never experienced that on the trail.
Good luck and keep us updated!

I\'ve plugged the slip yoke on my 231 with a cut up pop bottle, RTV and duct tape on the trail before.  Once on the street when a ujoint let go too :)

Once you get the SYE go buy a front shaft out of a zj or xj from a junk yard and have it resized. That is what I did on my ZJ and it is a nice cheap way instead of buying a whole new shaft.

ehh too late, I did the SYE and a new custom drive shaft for the rear end, it works wonders, I also drilled 4 holes through the rear diff yoke so I can use a stronger method to connect the drive shaft, because those 4 tiny screws that hold onto the rear shaft U-joint scared me.
