natural gas vs propane
« on: October 16, 2010, 03:17:05 PM »
So my wife was rattling through the charges that we get on our gas bill and it started to piss me off such as the bill issuance fee. A fee for the privilege of being a customer. But enough of my rant.

What is cheaper Natural gas or propane, when it come to home usage?

Natural gas burns more efficiently and is usually cheaper with all the costs added up and compared.

my shop furnace runs on Propane.
I use Burnwell
My last bill was for 2.599 per gallon

My house has natural gas from RG&E
While I cant quote my natural gas costs, im sure its the same as yours.

I have always been told that Natural Gas is more efficent then Propane. But I have nothing to back up that claim.

I\'ve always been of the understanding that heating with gas is cheaper than with pane, but likewise don\'t have numbers to back it up.

whats the difference? is that how the welding shops classify forklift tanks?
Doesnt that include the tank swap?
\"I think\" its a little cheaper to just get re-fill from say Ballantyne RV, or Country Max Farmington.

Funny I never pay attention to fuel prices, until i travel.
I guess i figure I dont have a too many choices as far as suppliers, and when do you figure the time and cost of driving across town to save a few bucks is easier than spending a few more dollars and filling up around the corner.
Its all the same to me considering Ill always want to heat my house and shop, and Ill always want to go wheeling and to work.
Well maybe not always go to work.

But i do plan to run a natural gas line to my shop so I can get rid of the propane tank and save a few more $ over the course of a year.

i pay a premium at Uhaul for racing because i am always in a hurry they usually let me over fill my tanks myself.  i put in 1.5 gallons over what a \"new exchange\" was from jackson.

automotive fuel is just taxed differently and comes out about 30 cents a gallon cheaper than normal use.  Home fuel for heating is taxed way cheaper and usually discounted in bulk.

i tank swap at jackson is 21$ out the door.  you bring a tank in any condition, they give you a dated, filled and fully functional tank back in less than 30 seconds.  it is worth my time because SMC metal and Rochester surplus are within a mile and im there all the time.

I work for a propane company installing tanks and gas systems , right now for home heating you should be paying 1.79 to 1.99 for a gallon of propane , if your paying more than that start calling for a different supplier, An avg. home to heat in january will use 5 to 7 gallons a day that includes running a hot water tank , hope my .02 cents help
