I happened to find my replacement in the junkyard. And when it broke I tack welded it to the block then rtv\'d it!

Mines sitting in a puddle or RTV at the moment minus the shoulder.

I guess I will look into the 4.0 tube and stick..  kinda wanted the bracket that bolts up to the block but new sounds pretty good too.

the 4.0L will bolt right where the 4.2L one does..
its just a shorter stick and tube..

4.2L ones are available at the dealer but are a fortune compared to the 4.0L..

went throught this when i rebuilt my motor

I finally got around to ordering something from the dealer. Ended up at Marina Dodge, great people and great service.  After looking at all available options including a supposed OEM tube for $189..   The counter guy found a tube and stick from a 90 4.2 that is labeled \"updated design\"

Dipstick Part#33004796 $8.54
Tube     Part#53020782 $18.75

The tube will be here in the morning, 4 days for the stick.  We\'ll see if they work or not and if they are actually improved or not//

Interesting,  they are really screwed up then..  The guy says it\'s a different part# than the 4.0..

I don\'t give a rats ass..  Just wanna dependably check my oil and not have it leak..

Might be a different number.... But it\'s the same.. And your right, who cares.... It will work and isn\'t 189

Pretty nice piece..  The reinforcement tab mounts further back on the block aft of the coil mounting boss. The tube itself doesn\'t extend as far forward as the OEM one, maybe 3\" further back but terminates at the same height.  The swedge at the bottom is done in 2 steps, looks much stronger than the old one..  I put in in the freezer for 15 minutes when I got home and lightly tapped it into the still warm motor..  Snug as a bug.

I quizzed Mr. Parts man again on it, he still maintains that it is a new and improved 4.2 tube and that the 4.0 is a different number..  Yeah, I know it doesn\'t matter but these are the sort of things that keep me awake at night..  I might just have to order the 4.0 one so I can see that it is the same... :-D

Either way it\'s a nice piece and pretty cheap, and I\'m Oh so happy to purchase something for the Cj that isn\'t Omix-whatever made in the Philippines.. Or used OEM that is in worse shape than the part I was trying to replace.  8-)
