When I go down, I use I-81 but I live farther east than most of you...

390 to 15 to 180 to 80 to 54 to 901 to 81 seems to be the way of choice for capable tow rigs  i can do it in under 4 hours alone :)

there are some REALLY backroads ways if you\'re feeling adventurous (look up PA125), but 901 & 54 is definitely my route of choice.  There\'s a couple good hills but it\'s not backwoods and it\'s much shorter.  If you want to skip the hills, 390/86/15/180/80/81 is a bit longer but MUCH shorter and cheaper than 90/81.

81 adds an hour to the trip. 15 is now almost all big highway, not the twisty old road it used to be. The route is easier now, but if you don\'t want to do the 54/901 section you can go 180 to 80 to 81. Not much further (but still shorter than 81 all the way) and all highway.

the route we always take is 390-15-180-54-80-901-81. Google maps will take you this route from rochester. We haul a 40\' trailer with two jeeps and a ton of gear and the F-350 handles it like a pro.

I always run 390-15-180-80-81 just for the ease of towing and the 15 min or so you save going the other way and a little harder of towing is not worth it to me towing the 2 jeeps on the trailer.

i will add, construction is getting quite annoying with 45 and 55 MPH sections with the back route.  81 might help make that decision for those more west

LOL!

We had a GPS moment this weekend, hauled the big trailer up/down a narrow dirt road for a re-route. Didn\'t need 4-WD, but if it was snow/ice we would have been screwed.

my piece of garbage GPS (that is made by another divsion of Delphi, the company i work for) has forced me to become a much better directionly based driver.  that thing is a pile.  i swear i have thrown it out the window almost 3  times.

I prefer my phone google maps live navigation. It\'s always up to date, and you get a street view of your destination, BUT if you are out of 3G it doesn\'t work.

I\'ve used MapQuest on my iPhone for a few drives now, and it rocks my socks off. free, voice guidance WITH street names, caches enough that it will still prompt for turns when out of coverage, and it still works just great in Edge service.
