rebuild or replace tourqe flight transmission
« on: June 01, 2010, 01:28:06 PM »
I\'m in desperate need of nnew trans in my CJ buggy.
I have gotten a price from Airport transmission a while back for a rebuild. They quoted me like 700ish.

Anyone know of a performance transmission shop that won\'t rape me. I\'m tossing around the idea of buying new but haven\'t researched it yet.

I think you\'re lacking ponies to push it with more than the trans is hurting you.  you\'re just stalling the trans at 2200rpm or so and that\'s that.

need more gears or more cojones IMO.  I don\'t think it\'s trans slippage - but I could be wrong.  Really depends what RPM you\'re seeing when it\'s not spinning.

My motor runs awesome, no smoke, no noises, starts and idles perfect any weather any time.

Horsepower #\'s i cant quote, but im going to start with the transmission. the stock dana 300 t-case gears could be lower, but 5:13 in the axles doesnt hurt.

I got the transmission used with an entire jeep for 100.00.
it plowed snow for most of its life! I knew what i was getting when i installed it. Just like smike!

thanks for your opinion, but im going to rule out the transmission in the equation by replacing or re-building.

i dont feel like swapping a smallblock drivetrain into working CJ7.
id rather start from scratch.

Robin @ NUWAY is getting pricing for me......

rebuilding trans is hard these days, i got quoted 5-700 in labor and 300$ in parts for a stock TH350 which are dime a dozen.

its one of those tough calls.  your trans is way easier to swap than mine.  i would probably try a 200$ CL used trans, or go with a crate trans for 700-900 (guessing)

first, id give it a fuild and filter change which i think hasent be done.  that could explain how its fine, but then seems to get worse in the day.  does your fluild level ever go up?  lol.

It\'s a TF999, not a 727.

Yea, i guess I mispoke when we were talking about it! Its a 999.
NUWAY quoted me 1300 for new but I would need to send my core in first. And wait 4-6 weeks.

I did a fluid change when we removed it from the donor CJ, it all drained out the dipstick tube while the jeep was rolled over! LOL

Either way I\'m pulling my tcase to add a longer input and twinstixx!

Just figured I would address the issue while I was working under it.

My dad used to send all of the trany work from his shop to Eagle Transmission for rebuild work. I\'m not sure if he is still using them but that is there specialty.

I think there is a shop in branchport that rebuilds trany\'s to he\'s on darby\'s corners rd just north of the county line.

I think my dad is mostly recomending Jasper for engines and trany\'s now if they are bad enough to need a rebuild.

I picked up two TF-999 last night that Cora found on Craigslist.

Since I paid $50 for both and the guy said that one was working fine when he pulled it, I figured maybe now ill try my hand at rebuilding one of them myself, while I look for new one!

IAN JOHNSON did it on extreme 4x4 TV...So can I! :gn:

Anyone have experience rebuilding automatics, or advice!

I rebuilt the th400 in my truck. My advice is use a workbench that you can lay out all the parts in order. Make sure the bench and all the parts going in are spotless, even a small amount of grime will kill it fast. I used carb and choke cleaner on every part before I put it in so it was spotless. No RTV on any internals, just o rings and gaskets. Even on the pan gasket I just use a small amount of grease to hold it in position while I apply it and get it tightened. The gasket should be doing the job of sealing. Also make sure you know what you are doing when installing the new clutch pack components. If they are not the right thickness the tranny will burn up fast. I had a friend who builds tranny\'s in his spare time give me a hand so I am not 100% sure what parts need to be measured, but I believe it is the thickness of the clutch material and spacer plates. When in doubt replace it. Also you may need to know what year the transmission is as I know on mine pre 88 used a different valve body plate and the kit came with both. Also pay attention when you take it apart so you know how it goes back together, especially the placement of the check balls in the valve body. Put a little grease on the front pump seal so it doesn\'t get toasted while the torque converter fills and the seal is running dry. Also fill the torque converter as much as possible before ya install it.

Then when your done and have it installed fill it up. Start the truck the shift it from R to D to 1 to 2 and repeat 5 or so times. Add more fluid as appropriate. Do it again. Add fluid. Again. Till the shifts from R to D are nice and firm.

Thats all I can think of at the moment,
Good Luck!
