Leaking stearing geer.
« on: August 25, 2009, 04:35:50 PM »
So over the past couple weeks i\'ve noticed a prgressing leak. Upon further inspection it is leaking from the bottom seal on the stearing gear where the pitman arm is attached.

I\'ve done a little research and it appears that a seal kit is fairly cheap but could be done with some effort.

Am i better off just picking up a reman\'d gear and swapping it out, or give the seal kit a chance and try to rebuild it myself/?

you are probably better off with a new one.  \"back in the day\" this was a common repair. to replace a sector shaft seal.  however now,  there is usually such a groove cut in the sector shaft that a new seal barely hold at best.  usually just slow the leak.

professionally, I replace the gearbox.

personally, i\'ll try anything once.

if you\'re comfortable pulling everything apart, try the $6 seal first.  very small gamble to avoid a $100 box....

I had the same prob on both my CJ and cora\'s CJ. a couple of  bottle of lucus stop leak and problem solved.
but it took a few weeks.
my steering box on my 95 f250 started to leak also, but I ended up paying to have that replaced . cost 500.00, I should have tried the lucas first.
