Bad A/C compressor
« on: June 25, 2009, 01:44:24 PM »
So I got in my xj after my dad had borrowed it for a week and I noticed a grinding noise just when it starts . 30 seconds later its still kinda there but much quieter. This after-noon I noticed a burning smell and I think its comming from the A/C comprssor. The A/C never worked very well so I think its repair time.

Any advice? Can I just get a shorter belt that bypasses the a/c?

got worse

SO I drove to work this morning and the A/C clutch was smoking once I got there. Oh and by the way its only 1.2 miles.

So i\'m going to bite the bit one and have the local garage take care of it. I can\'t be without the vehicle while I gather parts as its my DD.  I\'m thinking 500$
:(

if you have lived without AC, why not just pull the fuse so the clutch stops trying to engage to a seized compressor?

That\'s just it, the clutch was smoking even tho the a/c was not engaged. and since the a/c is on the serpentine ..... Its my DD I can\'t take the risk blowing the main belt, or park it while I wait for parts, or worse a fire.

So I bit down and dropped 600$
OUCH that hurt!

Oh well, now I have working A/C and next time I\'m at whispering pines waiting for traffic on the trail I won\'t be bugnuts. Or worse driving down the trail with my door hanging open :)

 Shh.. Ryan don\'t say that. Don\'t want to start any bad rumors..

Reminds me my A/C is on the down hill, but different thread for different time. Sorry for going a little off topic. Carry On...

If you have the time and don\'t care that your A/C is not working then get a delete pully and the shorter belt.

Or you could get really fancy and turn your A/C into On Board Air.  I had started researching it when I started to hear bearing noise from the compressor, but once it started smoking I had to bite the bullet. The labor was only 130$ but its still allot of money to me right now.  :bawl:

delete pulleys ussually are not needed most cases you just get the non ac belt and use the alternate routing
