Thought I\'d run this by you experts!  On my 2000 Cherokee the 4wheel was working great now it won\'t disengage properly.

When I put it back to 2wheel the light goes off but it stays in 4wheel.  It will release if I stop and back up or sometimes if I stop quickly.

Any thoughts?

Linkage bent or slipping.  Did it offer resistance when you shifted in and out?  Does the shifter seem to seat properly in 2WD?

Wingman, thanks for the reply.  When shifting 2w to 4w and back it\'s smooth and seats in properly, like nothing is wrong.

I understand adjusting the linkage isn\'t too difficult, so maybe I\'ll give that a try...

I\'ve got a 242 (part time and full time) and i have the same problem some times. Basically if there is any axle to axle loading the transfer case stays in 4wd when i switch it to 2wd. Ive noticed that there is a different \"feel\" to the transfer case stick in the 2wd position like its got a little spring holding it from being fully in 2wd. Once its completely in 2wd it feels down all the way. If memory serves, its because the link between the stick and the gear is a spring.

My way of dealing with it was to be sure to be on a slippery surface when going back to 2wd,  gas it a bit and it unwinds the bind and the transfercase pops loose.

Thought I\'d pass along what the problem was.  My tires in the front were newer and the back were maybe 50% tread.  Replaced the older tires and it works perfectly.  Much quieter too, when engaged.  My tire maintenance sucks, so I think I was screwing up our old 97 Grand Cherokee too!

Live and learn...
