Clutch Chatter...
« on: May 08, 2009, 06:50:43 AM »
Ever since I broke in the new motor I was having clutch chatter..  I chalked it up to the RMS not sealing at first and the fact I was more focused on the motor break in than the clutch..

I went and replaced the clutch this week and granted I only have a few miles on it.. im getting the same amount of clutch chatter (sounds like bolts are whipping around in the bellhousing)

Funny thing is.. and i never saw this before.. but both times (pre new clutch and after) I only get chatter when the engine warms up?

Im not saying the engine is causing the noise.. but rather when the drivetrain warms up..

I plan on going thtough with the break in as described, but have a bad feeling about this..

Any comments, suggestions or anything would be great.

SO you get noise when it warms up. Driving? Clutch engaged or not? Is it a new flywheel?

Only while driving or when it is sitting in N with with the clutch out?

Im just trying to figure if it could be in the tranny and not the clutch. Maybe there is some thing hitting inside the bellhousing.

only driving.. nohting when in neut..
I just had the jeep apart.. nothing in the bellhousing.. its deff clutch related..

all my mounts are solid.. (engine and tranny)
only thing that I can come up with is contamination.. but if it was fluid from either engine, tranny, or clutch slave I would
a. see a drip
b. notice loss of fluid
im seeing niether..

does the noise get bad when your on it real hard or like if you hold the brakes on and ride the clutch a little?

i was informed by someboyd smarter than me that the flywheels really shouldnt be cut... the hyd bearing cant really compensate for the difference.. (for perfect clutch engagement)
So I have a feeling I am going to be yanking the tranny... again.. to install a new flywheel.
of course the progect wouldnt be over there.. that would be to easy..

I would prob also want to change the imput bearing on the tranny.. anybody done this before on a AX15.. does it require full removal from the case or just the bearing retainer cover?

That is not true.

You cut a flywheel maybe .010\"-.020\" You will get more wear than that on the pressure plate and flywheel. SO that does not make sense.

Do you know how much it took to make it smooth?

Is the clutch slipping when it is chattering?

Im not the mechanic here by ANY means, but when I had Ryan replace my clutch in my AX15 he had the flywheel resurfaced and I never had a problem.

only took .10\" to make smooth.. but its not eh first time the flywheel was cut..
I measured it up against a spare that I had laying around and it was only .30 different so I went with it b/c it was balanced to the engine..
in retrospect i wish i had gone with the other one..

Im waiting the break in period before I freak out.. if its not settled down by then ill have to R&R...
