Name that sound
« on: April 16, 2009, 06:08:20 AM »
A new strange noise is coming from the Cherokee. It kind of a scrape/grand noise when I\'m going slow in and only when turning. Its in sync with tire rotation and seems to be coming from the front left.
I was thinking wheel bearings but I wanted to bounce it off you guys.

Easy first...

dragging a brake pad or debris in there?  Remove the caliper from the rotor and turn it...

also check out ball joints.. took me a while to find that recently on my car.. Hard point was it looked and sounded fine when up on a jack with no pressure on it.  It sounded exactly like you described.

I\'d put money on the axle ujoint, especially if it\'s only when turning since that\'s when the axle joints see angle.

I pulled the tire and disk to listen to the noise, amd it sounds like the ujoint.

So I have a few questions, what hold the shaft in the axle? is it just the hub? So I need to pull the diff cover to get the spyder gears once they fall out?

I have a spare xj axle can I just swap the short shaft?

thanks

pull the hub nut, pull the tire and caliper, pull the hub (three bolts from the back side), the shaft will slip right out.

top off the diff when you\'re done, I\'m not sure if the seals are below the oil level on a 30.3.  anti-seize suggested for all fasteners.

the hub will probably be a big pain to get out of the knuckle.  the bolts are likely to be a big pain before you get quite that far.  IIRC it\'s a 12 point socket, maybe 9/16\"?

yup dana 30
1/2 inch? and the bolts that hold the calipers are SAE as well. Every other nut and bolt I\'ve touched on this Heep is metric does this seem odd to anyone but me?

I\'ll try to do a write up on this.

Yup, bad u-joint. Looks like needle bearings on the wheel side of the axle seezed up. this overloaded the axle side and the needle bearings couldn\'t handle it.

It went really well until I realized I put the dust shield on backwards, kinda makes the front disk tough to put on.
