Field and Forest Fall Crawl 9/7-9

Chillin at Field and Forest Fall Crawl 2018

I was invited again to participate in the annual NEA4WD Fall Crawl hosted at Field and Forest Recreation Area in Harrisville, New Hapshire. Now in its 14th year, this is the signature event of the NEA. It is held in early September each year and features 15+ trail options, both on and off the property, ranging from stock-friendly to extreme, and attracts over 200 participants. There were a ton of sponsors (including our very own Torqmasters Industries), a huge raffle, and a killer BBQ.

I signed up for one of the red trails called Easy Street. I've run it before and while not the most extreme trail on the property, it turned out to be a difficult day. We had a small group of 5 and started off running Summit trail on the way to Easy Street entrance. Within the first 50', all but one had to winch. This would not be the last use of pulling power. Those rocks are big and spaced perfectly (or horribly) to make the going nearly impossible. By mid afternoon, the trails claimed a broken axle shaft, a blown front caliper, a broken ignition rotor, and a failed winch motor. Parts were sourced, repairs and/or recoveries were handled in good order.

Back at camp, we grabbed a snack and headed over to the raffle to see if we could win something good. One in the group walked away with a Smittybilt CO2 tank system. We hung out and talked until the BBQ was ready and finished the night with full bellies, liquid refreshment, and some warmth from a nearby campfire.

Sunday morning welcomed us with 45* temps after a starry night. It is still "summer", right??? Brrr!!! Three of us and another from a different group headed out to run some easier trails. We ran Boulderdash, Pinball, and then Buzzkill, taking the hard line on the exit. By then it was nearly 2p and time to pack up and head back to home sweet home. After loading up, one found a significant frame crack under his YJ.

It was a relaxing haul home thanks to the delay of Hurricane "Gordon". Back into the shop to lick wounds, assess damage, effect repairs, plan improvements, and make ready for the next trip...

Let's go wheelin' !!!
