NY Offroad Vehicle Registration

Hey folks, I\'m sure someone here can help me out.

As many of you know, I rolled my jeep at RC. Insurance is totaling it (yes they covered it, go figure). But I may be buying it. I\'m wondering what the process is to transfer the title from CA to NY. I\'m only going to be using my XJ as an offroad toy but I need to know if it has to be registered, does it need to be insured and how I go about doing this for an off-highway vehicle.

there really is no off highway registration here.  you can\'t do it as a quad, not that there\'d be a point in doing so anyway since you couldn\'t use it where quads can be used - which is pretty much nowhere....  You have to carry insurance to have plates in NY (not just to operate on the street, but to have plates at all, or face a daily fine when you go to renew).

soooooo what\'s the point in registering it anyway? it can either be on the road, or not, there\'s no green stickers here.

So, if its just going to be an offroad vehicle it doesn\'t NEED to be registered?

all NYS wheeling is private land or illegal, so correct.

What do you do as far as insurance? anything?

mikes is insured just like a normal truck because it still is inspected and registered.

You should be able to get it covered for liability under a personal umbrella policy or some companies offer OHV policies.
