Mud and my radiator.....and me!
« on: July 20, 2009, 02:53:09 PM »
So i have this problem after \'bogging\' of having the backside of my radiator caked with mud.  overtemp soon thereafter.
Just wondering if anyone had made progress in fighting this problematic buildup?

 OR

Should i just expect getting mud bad places if I am getting it good places too?

I\'ve +3\" of lift to install so maybe that will help get the front out of the mud a little...

Thanks ahead for all input!

the lift will help some but not much you need to cover up below it the easiest way is to hang a piece of rubber from the core support it will float on the top of the mud/water and help to keep it out your fan is kicking it up

I agree.  Check out the big mud trucks and how they do it.  Probably just something to keep that bow wave out.

cool. I don\'t have any cover there now, so i\'ll try that!  makes sense

I was going to trim the core support to try to raise the rad an inch or so,  and get a better angle to clean it from.

Could converting to an electric fan help?  It does seem that the solid fan sprays a lot of mud.

if you like mud and water you will probably be replacing electric fans.  the seals on the electric motors can only be so good.  I\'d expect the more you spend the better luck you\'ll have but this is only the voice of reason speaking, not of experience.

you\'ll also need to be able to shut them off for deep water/mud as the plastic blades are often not too durable.

I have had a electic fan on my jeep for a wile now and have not had any probelms with it its a two speed fan from a older taurus (one big fan) it has worked great, only time I shut it down is around really deep mud/water. other than that it is always on.

Cool! at some point I was hoping to go electric.  Mechanical fans rob so much engine power!

mech. robs some power but the electric will not hold up if you keep going through the deep stuff you can give it a shot but in my bogging experiences a viscous clutch fan is the way to go

and if you make a cover of some sort you just wanna let it hang down from the core support not tie it up like a skid plate would be. old tractor tubes work great ie farm tractor not lawn

yeah, a clutch on my fan would help a bunch,  its the 1:1 that robs my power.  Reliability is definitely a benefit of mechanical.

I wouldn\'t have thought of a loose splash shield!  cool idea, would kinda float where it needs to.  right?

exactly why you leave it loose it will float and cover when it needs to and dump out any excess water when you are done utilizing it
