Project TJ-5
« on: July 17, 2009, 10:44:51 AM »
Hey I actually worked on my heep!

I cut off the factory motor mounts off. Cleaned and painted the frame where they were removed and mocked up the adapter.

I\'m also working on pulled pork! I\'ve been smoking these three butts for about  4 hours now! mmmmmmm

I think the tires would be 18x4 r15 Maybe I can get them in an MTR :)

The frame is clean because I\'ve ground it and painted it, a couple of feet at a time over the past year.  Look closer and you\'ll see a screw driver holding the upper control arm to the top of the diff.

This is the point where I mock up the the two main drivers for the entire project the grill and engine position. Every thing just basically extends from there. I plan on adding about 6 inches to the hood and mount the tub back that amount. Then I\'ll comp cut the rear, so that the rear axle will look mounted back 4 inches, to fit the extra 10 inches of wheel base.

Oh and my wife and I pulled the pork this evening and it was excellent. North Carolina style for sandwiches on Saturday for my son, Connor \"You need Lockers!\" Howe\'s birthday party.

OK a little progress in this slow project.

I\'ve decided to stick with the CJ grill. And mocked up what I have using the stock TJ mount. All the measurements I\'ve taken show a 9.5 inch length from the front of the grill to the tip of the frame. This seems to be the same with the CJ and the TJ so  I\'m going to stick with it. Based on that, I\'ve done allot of measuring and this is what I\'ve come up with.

More drawings. I made this rough TJ drawing from a jpg.

Next step is to figure out how close the body can be to the frame. The wheel well relief in the tub will fit between the frame rails.  Here is the picture. Let me know if any one wants a dxf of this.

Update:

I was tearing into my \"free\" 350 and here is what I found out.

I used the starter to spin the motor and seeds start flying out of the exhaust manafold. looks like I might have a rodent issue in the garage. Next step a compression test

#1 cylinder holding almost zero and when I spun the motor with the plug out seeds and stuff fly out the plug hole. Even after oiling it still ill not hold air. I\'m hoping its just a valve hung up on a seed or something.

#2 was aroung 130 before oil 145 after. all others were 150-180 psi. Tearing down to a long block... The engine looks clean, no sluge anywhere except on the inside of the clutch housing. The clutch and flywheel looked good, so I think I\'ll reuse that.

If I\'m reusing a clutch does it matter if I put the clutch asembly back on the flywheel in the same location? Should I have the flywheel cleaned up, if so what does that mean?

I\'ll post some pics.

I\'ll pull the heads later and see what is up with #1

technically you should put it back the way it came off but you probbably would not have an issue if you did not i would only resurface the fly wheel if you were replacing the cluctch or if you see hot spots or other damage to it

Ahhh spring, time to do some work on the project.

I did some tear down on the Engine, ordered a new Cam 12-235-12 its a tourqy cam with some aggressive lift, so some head/valve work may be in order. I picked up some 64cc heads  14096217 castings. The mild cam might make dynamic compression high which is ok since I was thinking making the rig e85 only. More on that next year....

Speaking of heads I am be looking to borrow a spring compressor and a valve height mic in the late summer.
I\'d love to talk to some one in the club who has done some head work in the past for advice....
I\'m hoping to get away with some minor head cleanup and new springs, and retainers. If I get ambitious I might try some pocket porting work. I have the old 78cc heads to practice on.

Major Score! I just picked up a pair of Ford NP205 Cases!

So now I have all the big pieces.
Next step, moddify the chevy bell housing to fit the ford transmission.
