sm465 driver side drop
« on: April 04, 2009, 09:21:15 PM »
Ug, I\'ve been looking into the idea/problem that I have found my self in. I\'ve got a 465 tranny bolted to a 350 for my project but my project is TJ based.

Options, buy an expensive tcase adapter so 241 and 231 tcase\'s can be used
naaaa

I was talking to smike last week and he mentioned the Ford205
I did some reading and the ford tcases are mostly 31 spline
While the sm465 came with 10 short, 35 short( the one I have) and 32 long.

So can the input gear of a gm case be swaped into a ford case? I\'d also have to swap my tranny main shaft, or get a new 465.
Does anyone have these parts that I can look at and take some measurements?

Or since the 10 short used a small spud shaft, could a 35 spline spud shaft be made to couple the gm tranny to the ford case?

Just thinking out loud...

Thanks,
Ian

I\'ve got a sm465 and 205 combo (10 short) that is pretty accessible but I\'m out in Phelps.  If no other options arise...

I think you should be able to swap a GM input into the Ford case.  You may have to change bearings as well.  as long as you\'re looking at round 6 patterns you should be good to go, Ford never did the racetrack 8 thing.

Another option is to ditch the sm465 all together and get a Ford T18 and 205 from a bronco or full size.

Looks like the bell housing changes are minor compared to the transfercase adaptation on the 465.

any opinions on the t-18? Is it fully syncro\'d or just 2-4 like the 465...

I\'m pretty sure 1st and R are not synchronized.

I happen to have a granny low T18 from a Ford, with a 205 adaptor and a bell housing if it might do you any good.  I\'m running the 205 though so you cant have that.

Hold on to it I may make you an offer for it.
I don\'t think I need the bell housing.
Want to trade for a SM465 :)
its a 2wd :(

If I recall the SM465 is something I could mate to a Cummins 4bt someday, whereas my T18, not so much....

but a lot of 4BTs come with the 465, or a Turbo 400, I\'d have to do some research to see if I\'d be interested in a trade.  I don\'t know GM transmissions at all....

i know this is years old but for informative purposes sm465's did come in 90's style 3/4 tons with 241 drivers side drops.... i have one and im using it for my build.  they are out there, but im sure this hurdle has been cleared and your off wheeling with your project.
