Title: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on July 13, 2008, 07:46:58 PM
So I need some help with this thing. I freaked out when it overheated today and when I got home I let it cool down and when i turned it on it idled with the temperature at about 240. I don\'t think it should be that high and what do I do to get it down?
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: MrMindless on July 13, 2008, 09:32:41 PM
1) make sure the cooling system has no air in it
2) make sure the radiator is clear.  I know it\'s been mud-packed before
3) make sure the fan is working right.  mechanical thermal clutches can fail - like mine in the Dakota has.
4) check the thermostat to make sure it\'s opening when it should.
5) once you know the cooling system can be trusted and to do this won\'t make a bad situation worse, idling a motor to cool it down is more effective and less thermally stressful - but if it gets hotter of course that\'s not helping things

additional info:
1) take the cap off when it\'s cold and make sure the radiator is full.  start the motor and add coolant as needed.  when it starts overflowing put the cap back on.
2) visual should take care of this.  water from the backside forward is the best cleaning method
3) if it\'s an electic fan, it should come on when it gets hot.  if it\'s a mechanical fan once it\'s overheating if you rev the motor it should sound like a jet taking off.
4) the hose going to the top of the radiator should stay cool until the engine reaches operating temp and then get hot fast.  you can check this at the same time you\'re checking for air in the system.

oh yeah - sometimes XJs just suck at staying cool.  if the system passes all of the above tests, make sure the radiator is good and clean (that\'s the easiest thing to not be certain of) and run some Water Wetter to help it move more air.

also be sure your a/c (if equipped) is off, and running the heat on full blast full hot will help suck heat out of the coolant.  the heater core is just like another radiator.

On the trail you can also pop the hood to the safety latches and that will allow a bit of extra air through.

it has 2 fans and theyre wired to be going at all times when the ignition is turned. do you know if you burn a lot of oil offroading?
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: smichaelR22 on July 14, 2008, 07:01:47 AM
it has and e fan and a mech fan- both working

when it was hot, coolant resivoir was to the top.  couldnt check to see if it had air in the system.  i figured it was a stuck/cranky thermostat
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: MrMindless on July 14, 2008, 08:39:00 AM
if your motor burns oil it\'ll burn oil.

Me?  I only burn about a quart per 5,000 mile change.  And I\'ve never done the belly pan gasket, that\'s probably where half that comes from.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on July 14, 2008, 09:35:18 AM
i was REALLY low on oil when i got home. i looked for leaks and theres nothing i can see or anything on the ground so i figured im burning it but its a lot of oil to be just burning so i was hoping i blew it out on sunday lol
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: MrMindless on July 14, 2008, 09:44:53 AM
unless you rolled it you didn\'t loose it by wheeling.  you just lost it by just running the truck.  see how it does on the road, watch for blue smoke while on the gas and at startup....  do a compression test if you really care to be scared.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: smichaelR22 on July 14, 2008, 10:13:07 AM
hmm i didnt see any blue smoke behind you. Did you check it before you wheeled? was it good?
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on July 14, 2008, 10:37:53 AM
i just found out the stick was jammed up and now i have too much oil in it....duhhhh. does anyone run with more water than antifreeze in their radiator? there is a lot of antifreeze and not much water in mine. would this affect it?
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: smichaelR22 on July 14, 2008, 11:22:07 AM
how are you deciding how much water and how much antifreeze is in there?  (it mixes and all looks one color??)

sounds like you need a good flush and refill with a new thermostat while your at it to eliminate alot of questions...

Post by: MrMindless on July 14, 2008, 11:57:16 AM
sounds like Smike is correct.  and remember that it\'s both poisonous and tasty so don\'t just dump it, take care of it properly.

Post by: kensdodge on July 14, 2008, 04:34:42 PM
was the over flow tank way over full like to the top ?  if it was you have 1 of 2 problems either the thermostat stuck closed or ya puked the head gasket . head gasket is pretty easy to diagnose if drain the overflow fil the rad start it with the cap on and it starts pushin fluid into the tank or the hoses start gittin har chances are it the head gasket . if ya have access to a pressure checker throw it on rev the engine if you see a substantial pressure increase its the head gasket .

So this isn\'t really an update but I am in the process of installing the CB and getting the jeep inspected. I got a nice set of wheels from a friend of GTJake so things are well underway.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: GTJake on July 22, 2008, 04:41:29 PM
im glad that you got those wheels! did you go to his house to pick them up?? if so...did you see the monster grand cherokee in his driveway??
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on July 22, 2008, 07:32:08 PM
he droppd them off to my work. im pretty sad i didnt see it. im a bit nervous about those rims fitting my tires. they seem realllllly big widthwise. i have a question about getting a drivers side light lens thing. its broken and i guess it wouldnt pass inspection haha

Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on July 23, 2008, 09:50:36 AM
another thing when it failed inspection....i guess i need to get stabilizer links. if i got quick disconnects would i still need them?
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: MrMindless on July 23, 2008, 10:23:32 AM
quick disconnects generally replace the swaybar end links.

Paul or anyone else who knows inspection law better than I do: is this BS or can lack of a swaybar really be a cause for failing?
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on July 23, 2008, 11:32:24 AM
so i wouldnt need to buy those too? just the quick sway bar disconnects which are like 130 on 4wd.com??
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: MrMindless on July 23, 2008, 11:48:04 AM
$130 for disconects?!?

That\'s outrageous.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee

where is a cheaper place to go?
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: smichaelR22 on July 23, 2008, 11:01:44 PM
i was told any oem suspention component removed or disconnected could deem fail.  yet they didnt fail the scrambler with the sway bar removed...  he did make me put a cat on though
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee

This isn\'t normal is it? It looks a bit cut down...
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: MrMindless on July 24, 2008, 10:32:19 AM
the threads are cut off the end, and it\'s missing the matching bushing, washer and nut.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on July 24, 2008, 10:58:06 AM
so what do I need to get/do to be able to get the sway bar on
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: MrMindless on July 24, 2008, 11:19:46 AM
replace that end link or get some threads welded onto it.  I just used a washer that would have worked there last night, don\'t know if I have any more laying around.

Somebody might have some end links laying around.

or buy or make quick discos.  $130 really seems insane for a couple hours\' work...  though material prices have become insane, so maybe not quite so crazy.

Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on July 30, 2008, 01:46:26 AM
so i was driving around at 230 this morning and realized that the jeep wasn\'t overheating. in fact i was under 210 (the normal). does this mean my waterpump sucks or the heat sucks or the jeep sucks...
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: MrMindless on July 30, 2008, 10:29:50 AM
depends on how it was overheating before....  a bubble may have worked out, it might have been the cooler air temps, could have been a lot of things.

cb is pretty much done just trying to figure out which wire is only on when the jeep is running so i dont kill the battery. antenna was a pain to install. cleaned it for the first time today and found some of the owners old tools haha

School has been busy. I haven\'t really had a chance to do anything fun. I installed a PA system so I have been avoiding cops around school. Do you guys think my cherokee could fit 35s on it? I know for a fact the guy had 33s on it before so would it work out? I want it to look bad ass :D
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: GTJake on October 12, 2008, 02:44:47 PM
how much lift does it have? and do you just want it to look good or do you want to be able to wheel it?

u MIGHT fit 35s but you will only be able 2 go in a straight line and it wont flex at all....making it a useless trail rig
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on October 12, 2008, 05:42:36 PM
The guy never really gave a great answer on the amount of lift but I would guess around 4 inches with the fenders cut up. The 35s would be all terrains just to look badass because I have 33 TSLs so I would use those on the trail.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: smichaelR22 on October 12, 2008, 08:48:27 PM
as i recall your jeep looked pretty high and rollerskate like with the 31\"s? - 33\"s seemed like they would fit right, might be a strech getting some 35\"s on- sure you could try it...

Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on October 24, 2008, 05:31:06 PM
I didn\'t get the water wetter but I guess it is normal for cherokees to run that hot. With bigger tires I am guessing it runs hotter too so I want it as low as possible.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: GTJake on October 24, 2008, 06:10:47 PM
what?

ive never heard that? and if an XJ runs hot then we would know about it as a wrangler has the Same Engine.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: MrMindless on October 25, 2008, 08:52:33 PM
poor cooling is very common in XJs.  they have a much more cramped engine compartment than Wranglers and I think a smaller radiator as well.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: JordanWalk193 on October 25, 2008, 09:26:01 PM
especially with 150k miles on it I would want it to last as long as possible. Do you guys know much about fender flares? I know the guy cut the :censor: out of them but I don\'t know if I bought wide ones if they would fit

So my cherokee has a problem every once and awhile with it losing power. Ill be driving and it seems like it ran out of gas and the RPMs drop and as soon as its about to stall out it revs up real high. What causes this?

TPS should affect cruise control but not economy, or surging....

13 is terrible though.  is your odometer accurate?

Plugs/cap/rotor/wires?  fuel system?  Not sure if you have a filter but I\'d check it if you do...

\"light weight exhaust\" =\'s  No exhaust from headpipe back.

I had a 93 XJ for a year and had hoped to mod it.  However, when I bought it, I had no idea that it was a flinstone mobile...  Seriously, the floor pans under both the driver and passenger side were rusted out under the carpets.  I repaired them as best I could before the other problems (parking brake button, water pump, etc.) started in - mine was very high mileage and drank oil when I got it  ~165,000 and finally, the engine blew...

However... I really liked it anyway and it\'s too bad that I started out with one that was so far gone.  I think that despite the lack of a frame, they make a fine offroad truck and there\'s a lot that you can do with them.  I would get one again some day.  Good luck with yours!

getting the new exhaust put on...hopefully itll help out a bit with the gas. the sputtering and surging hasnt happened in a few days thank god. does anyone know the law for fender flares? can i just get away with not having any? im not worried about the paint job haha
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: GTJake on November 19, 2008, 05:53:14 PM
the law is that fenders have to stick out far enough to cover the tires
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: MrMindless on November 19, 2008, 06:48:32 PM
There is no tire coverage law in NY that I\'ve ever found or has been pointed out to me.  PA requires full coverage.  Some other states require mud flaps.  I\'ve seen references to no \"excessive spray\" but that is all.  If you know differently Jake I\'d love to see a reference.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee

I was going to disagree with Mike, but I did a little research and found that the section I was thinking of (375-25 VTL) only applies to commercial vehicles (ie. tractor trailers).  I\'ll do some more research tomorrow.
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: GTJake on November 20, 2008, 08:33:36 AM
i heard somewhere that you needed full coverage but i never did the researsh myself. i guess you dont need it. its still a good idea tho
Title: Re: My Jeep Cherokee
Post by: Wingman on November 21, 2008, 10:37:43 AM
OK, here is the final word...

Section 375 subdivision 25 of the Veh and Traffic Law and Title 15 part 47 of the Commissioner\'s Rules and Regs govern the placement and use of splash guards.

In summary, both of these sections stipulate that only commercial motor vehicles and combination vehicles such as tractor trailers are required to have this equipment.

Part 47.2 specifically exempts passenger cars, suburbans, and station wagons.

I interpret that to say that if you have passenger plates on your ride, you don\'t need mud flaps, splash guards, or even fenders.

It\'s still a good idea, though.

getting a front locker for winter traction is a bad idea.  you don\'t have the option of unlocking a hub, so both front wheels will want to turn the same speed.  a slick road doesn\'t have enough friction to unlock the locker, so it will not want to steer well on slick surfaces.

Post by: Doppleganger on January 05, 2009, 10:02:37 AM
Grounds.  Check your grounds.  Your car stereo is probably hooked up to the factory harness, which should be well-grounded.  If it\'s aftermarket, wouldn\'t be a bad idea to add a ground strap from the chassis of the radio, to the chassis of the vehicle.

The CB\'s grounds are even more important, since it\'s the one transmitting.  Make sure the power wire is grounded to a good chassis ground, and that there is a good ground between your battery, and the engine, and the chassis, and even the exhaust.  Also, wherever your antenna is mounted, make sure the ground there is good.  Make sure your SWR is below 2:1, and preferrably below 1.5:1.  The location of your antennas can have an effect on interference, too.  Most of the interference I see is normally thru poorly shielded amps or line-level cables.

except with a pigtail that gets in the way and it\'s usually rusted in BADLY.

PB B\'laster is my choice  for rusty things.  bang on the bung with a hammer to help break it loose.  you may have a fun time with clearances, and the plug is usually a pain to get at.  I usually cut the pigtail off the one I\'m removing and do it with a deep well socket, and install the new one with a LOT of anti-seize and an open end wrench.

so the guy that owned the jeep before me did a lot of damage to it. he ruined the exhaust system and i dont even have the wires so ive got 1 o2 sensor instead of 2...he also put in the wrong type/size spark plug. just changing the plugs and distributer cap my gas mileage has gone up from around 10-11 to about 18 mpg. sweet!
