Title: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: carchameleon on April 03, 2008, 08:33:56 PM
this is my first jeep, and i love it.  its a 76 cj7 with a 258, 3speed.  as much as i can tell everything is stock.  i have lots of ideas and possible plans.  i\'d like some suggestions and tips of any kind.  if anyone would like to lend a hand.

can anyone tell me what my stock axles/gear ratios are/should be?

i have a parts jeep that i just bought (white 86 cj7, no drivetrain or doors/top).  fiberglass tub and good frame.  my cj7 has a good frame but the body is a little rough.  the parts cj has all kinds of other parts, if anyone needs something let me know and i\'ll see whats there.

i would like to end up with 33\" tires.  beyond that i\'m trying to figure it out.  i think i need a 4\" lift.  would also like to eventually like to have dana44 front/rear axles w/ different gearing.  the axle swap is more a down the road than the lift.

let me know what you think, thanks

wow, they both look to be in decent shape.  The white one looks like it already has a lift even.

Post by: carchameleon on April 03, 2008, 10:20:27 PM
kind of... i wouldn\'t drive with it, it looks like a crappy shackle lift.

the tires are pretty aggressive 33\'s  too much for me

he used a couple of 1/2 ton chevy axles for mockup (they\'re kind of on it now...)

ok lets see if I remember eveything about a \'stock\" one. if you have the 258 then your gear ratio is 3.07 if you have a 3 speed you have a t90 (not sure if that is right.) if you still have the stock axles for the 86 the rear might be a dana 44 (kinda hard to get) the 76 has a set of narrow tracks 20/30 axles the stock axles from the 86 are a better axle due to being a wide track version and you may already have them. I wheeled my cj for 3 years with my 20/30 wide tracks with 33\" tires and they held up just fine. if you are not going over 33\" don\'t waste time on upgrading axles. you don\'t really neeed to because you will have to outboad your axles to fit any of the better axles.  as far as the 258 goes its an ok motor (DON\'T and I repeat DON\'T buy a weber for it.) I blew up 3 258 becuse of the way it will dump fuel in. it blew holes into the number 3 and number 4 pistions everytime. if you want to swap out engines you have alot of options. but some require more work than others. cevey 350 or 4.3 swap you will need to swap out everything (motor, trans, and transfer case) or buy a expensive adapter plate for it. ford 302/351 you can swap in with only getting the motor. bellhousing and the clutch parts. also there is a amc 305 and 360 but they are rare and hard to come by.

the white jeep looks like it has to have more than a shackle lift.... i bet it has a rough country 2.5\" spring lift (by the decal) and shackles, maybe a body lift- hard to tell from the pics, looks like it was built for 35\"s.  did you get the springs from the white CJ or just the frame / body?

or it might be SOA.
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: carchameleon on April 04, 2008, 07:57:16 PM
the picture is what i got minus the top/doors.

it does look like a soa lift with crappy shackles.

also the 86 doesn\'t really have any running gear, the axles are just mock up axles...   chevy 1/2 tons all i know about them is that they roll...

are the frame/axles pretty much the same on 76 and 86 cj7\'s?

i\'m going to be tearing into the parts jeep tomorrow....
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: carchameleon on April 04, 2008, 08:09:59 PM
i forgot another question...
with a 4\" spring lift (planning on probably a pro-comp lift) will it effect the ride quality of my jeep, or will i have to do drive line modifications?

also do i need the 4\" lift for 33\"tires?
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: meangreen on April 05, 2008, 09:38:59 AM
yes for 33 without any body mods you will need 4\" of lift. when you first get the spring they will be a bit rough for  about a year but after that they will soften up a bit. as far a s the driveshafts I didn\'t leaghten mine but they are right at full exstention and \"should\" be done but for 5 years of wheeling I have yet to break one:-D
this is mine with 4 inch pro comp lift and 33\'s with about a year on the springs

i\'ll be putting up some pictures of the parts cj as soon as i get a chance to take some, possibly this week,  probably this coming weekend...

got it pretty close to just the frame/tub

i have more to think about after talking to a few people on sunday at whispering pines, beating on my stock cj and having a lot of fun doing it.
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: carchameleon on May 10, 2008, 09:51:12 AM
could i take running gear and everything off a 91 wrangler and use it on my parts jeep?  would that work?  found one on craigslist with rotted frame/body. (http://rochester.craigslist.org/car/674724790.html)
although i have no where to put anymore vehicles.

if i had somewhere to put that one, and if it has a title that would be a option to not take my 76 apart...  so you guys wouldn\'t complaign... haha

Looks like a great plan.

I\'d be willing to help you out with that in exchange for some of the interior parts and doors.

I don\'t know if that\'s much of an \"upgrade\" - unless you want to return it to stock.
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: carchameleon on May 10, 2008, 11:51:54 AM
any idea where to put it?

i figure engine/drivetrain is good, don\'t know what stock axles are.  any other ideas?

i don\'t have space to put anything,  i have to park in the street b/c my trailer and my jeep are in the driveway (with my parent\'s cars).... my little sister gets home today too, so there is really no room...

dump it at mikes for the parts, then take what you want :)

I can\'t wait to have room.....  ask Keith.  once my trailer is out of the way he may be more inclined to say yes :)

Post by: carchameleon on May 12, 2008, 08:07:09 PM
i\'ll call the guy tomorrow,  then i\'ll talk to Keith and you.

by the way, what do you guys think about painting my frame yellow?
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...

keith loves it.

I hate it.

(he does not check here often.  in a few weeks [maybe never...] he\'ll confirm that I gave his opinion correctly.)

my frame is stop sign red :)

POR15 it before you shot color....

did you get some scout 44\'s yet?      :-D
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: carchameleon on May 12, 2008, 09:02:01 PM
add it to the list...

what do you think of that 91 wrangler idea?

the big things i\'m trying to come up with are a plan and a title...
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: smichaelR22 on May 13, 2008, 06:34:55 AM
i like the idea of getting another jeep and a title... im hesitant to put all that time and a significant amount of money the way that motor looked in the pics.  it does look fuel injected which is awesome and might be worth it if its a descent motor-
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: smichaelR22 on May 13, 2008, 06:38:33 AM
now that im looking at that listing... is that the same YJ that was at the Pines last year the day the RIT kid rolled the TJ?  I remember the body kit and goofy sides? or did they all look that way those unmentionable years?  :)
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: GTJake on May 13, 2008, 07:06:09 AM
NO! they did not all look that way! here are some pix of my \'87 when i had it. we put alot if work into this one. engine/trans rebuild, paint, rough country lift and shocks, wheels and TSL/SX tires....

With the 91 you will get a vacuum actuated front axle, which are a pain unless you replace it with a cable actuator or there are ways to permanently engage it.  This keeps the front axle spinning all the time even when in 2wd.

i had a problem with that on mine. somehow i broke it off and had to use some JBWeld to fix it

Post by: carchameleon on May 14, 2008, 09:37:06 PM
i assume a 92 wrangler would be the same?
i found another on craigslist with a broken frame (http://rochester.craigslist.org/pts/674710486.html)

what if i used that stuff and dana 44s?
how do i find some 44s?  (probably a future mod)

now your talking....  but what tranny does it have, and how much / whats left?
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: meangreen on May 15, 2008, 09:15:05 AM
the best 44\'s are the scout II axels and if you use a wrangler frame there is no out boarding neccacry, but if you use the cj you will have to out board your frame. not that hard to do though.
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...

scout 44s are probably hard to find arent they?

i saw a scout on CL for 300$ with axles and drivetrain/rest gutted out.... kick my self i didnt have the room at the time    :(

there out there and you can still find them you may have to look, cheak ebay and see if any are close to here.
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: carchameleon on May 21, 2008, 08:50:45 PM
looks like I have a running jeep and a project...

so.... maybe a 360 or 304 and a couple of dana 44\'s like i was planning.   other than that and a cage, i\'m going to try and make it as budget as I can.

keith has a v8 grand cherokee that I can use,  my jeep is not going to be automatic though.  if i can put a 5speed or a 4speed in it with the gc stuff.... but no auto.

Beffier, diesel

Ok, new idea,

sell the 86, and buy an 80\'s for F250 or F350, put that running gear in the 78
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: MrMindless on May 27, 2008, 09:48:01 AM
only a 350 or a crew cab 250.  most 250s were TTB, careful there...

hes going low dollar geterdone trail rig for this summer, then going to do a v8 swap later.  i offered the scrambler motor, wich would bolt in and be done and run (as good as a carbed 258 runs), also could throw my other 3 speed inbetween the case and other 3 speed so he could actaully crawl.

carnage from the 19th at mike\'s apt...
oil filter - hit motor mount (i owe mike an oil change)
hard top - nailed a tree, took a piece out...
radiator - not sure when it happened but the fan hit the radiator and made a hole... it was leaking anyways...

-perception whitewater kayak  (http://rochester.craigslist.org/boa/727938373.html)
-96 chevy k1500 silverado 1/2ton 4x4 (not on craigslist yet)($3800)

got the 35\'s today, not bad but i think i\'m going to keep them as trail tires.  that means i\'m looking for wheels for them.  i need 5 on  5.5 bolt pattern, and a backspacing of 2\" or 2.5\".

also took my radiator out, going to see about getting it recored tomorrow at work, hopefully they can do it quick, and hopefully its cheap...

by the way, all 3 motor mounts are just fine,  so i\'m not sure what happened to let the fan hit the radiator...
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: carchameleon on June 27, 2008, 11:49:03 PM
so it looks like the tranny mount is probably the problem... won\'t be sure until i get it back together.

by the way the radiator place reparied my radiator for $40, going to see if they can repair it again...

updates and pictures tomorrow probably

waste of a cherokee but looks like a lot of fun.  it shows just how much jeeps can take, it wasn\'t even done when they killed it...

so i got the tranny mount out last night, definitely the cause, got a new one, going to put it in tomorrow and switch out radiators.  hopefully i\'ll be all set then.  i\'ll post some pics too.

got to smike\'s last night, and realized my u-bolts were a little loose and the broken bottom leaf on the driver rear partially fell out...   i pulled the other half out and tightened all the u-bolts, looks like i\'m going to use those add a leafs after all.    also planning on dropping the tank, possibly get a  new tank and i will be running new lines and getting a new fillerneck.

got my front aussie in tonight, with a little help.  now i just have to put the rest of the axle together, and start on the rear...
the gas tank is on the floor, tank looks good, got a new sender, i\'m going to run rubber fuel line.  i\'ll put a couple of pics up soon

by the way, i put 1 add a leaf in to replace the broken one (and to compare before i put the rest of them in).  the ride height is 1/8th of an inch lower than the non add a leaf, interesting...

smike found me a t-18 on ebay last night, and i clicked the \"buy it now\" button and got it.  going to pick it up tomorrow after work.  driving my broken tow rig to get it.

smike and i got about 15 miles from my house sunday night and my transmission started slipping...  turns out i lost 3rd and 4th gears.  at least i still have 1st and 2nd...

looking for a cheap daily (5spd american), then planning on trading my truck in for a nicer one when i can feel comfortable doing so.

Paul, if you want to borrow a driver I can see if the RamCharger is up to daily duties again.  I think I got the front pump seal to seal up again and that was the only thing wrong with it when I parked it.  Well that and the howl but it\'ll probably be fine howling for thousands of miles.

Only about 10mpg but at least it has all three of its speeds.

sorry i\'m slacking with the updates, i\'ll try and get updates and pics up this weekend

t18 is sitting in the cj with out a crossmember (on a jackstand & bolted up to the engine)
just have to make the cross member and measure then get the right size driveshafts...
Title: Re: my new/first cj7 project...
Post by: smichaelR22 on October 16, 2008, 08:42:04 AM
That tranny swap was way to easy- figures the cross member wouldnt fit at all.  Stoped and got some 1.25\" x 3/16 box and some 1/4\" plate for the skid.  still need some other materials, but we should be able to get it hangin soon.

Gears!

crossmember fabed and welded up tuesday night, got it bolted up with the tranny sittin on its own weight last night.  Drive shafts measured and dropped off at fleet pride for a front retube and a rear shortning this morning- they will be done this afternoon.

crossmember looks sweet nice and high, and driveline angles look good.

Did you get your camera back?

Since you dont update:

many leafs were broke, Ryan donated some YJ leafs in return for beverage, Paul got some 3/8ths plates that im going to drill for new shackels at work today.   he is also trying to get bushings together, get the new ubolts holding the new springs in, and get her ready for this weekend.

yeah, when we left MacG\'s they were really flat and only about 1/4\" from hitting the bumper.

Post by: carchameleon on December 17, 2008, 09:57:56 PM
They are ok,  see how it does this weekend and go from there,  I drove it today and it still rode nicely.
Did ok in the snow, took it easy to make sure I wouldn\'t slide off the road and roll...  Didn\'t want to hurt smike or myself.

Excited for this weekend,  the wiper issue is a existing issue and I\'ve delt with it for this long, it\'ll be ok for the weekend.
