Title: question on front locker in snow
Post by: jasonw on February 09, 2013, 02:05:28 PM
I have never really driven my Jeepster in the snow, but this year I have been forced to, so I need to know how you guys do it with an auto locker in the front end. Would it be better to leave one hub unlocked, or does that wear out parts, or hurt anything? If I can just leave one hub locked is it OK to run in 2wd with one hub open......sorry if these seem like stupid questions, I just don't know. What I do know is that it was sketchy driving home last nite in 4wd, cause the pile was darting all over the place and didn't like to turn under power.......tia for any input

Absolutely right on pushing and not steering well in 4x4.

It may turn better with one hub unlocked but you won't like the dartiness of it in a straight line. I'd suggest 2 wheel unless you need 4 wheel, and deal with the push. I think you'll be much worse off in 4x3 than in either 4x2 or 4x4.

Thanx for the input Mike, I will just deal with it, its not like its an everyday driver just wondering if I could make it a lil more predictable, but then I'd loose the pucker factor that keeps me from getting lazy when I'm driving the relic on the roads lol

does the locker in the Jeepster behave differently than the auto-locker I used from Aussie?
I ran that Jeep for a couple years throughout the winters with no issues at all.  It never seemed to push or want to understeer when in 4x2, and when in 4x4 I was careful to watch my speed and be aware that issues might come up (which they never did on the road).

It'll be transparent in 2 wheel drive. That's the beauty of an automatic locker as opposed to a spool.
