Title: Renamed: Rusty MC
Post by: jACeL86 on May 23, 2011, 12:15:13 PM
Just dropped the cash on some new goodies! Hopefully they\'ll be in with time to spare for install before 101. If I ever get 10 minutes, I\'ll start an actual build thread on here.

I'm useless at updating!
Tore into this thing last night....well kinda. All the Metalcloak stuff is coming off for sandblasting. Rust is no good. Well, any fastener that terminated inside the body tub came right out. Anything outside is rusted solid. Stainless button head hex bolts are useless when the nyloc nut is crap mild steel. Tried every trick i could think of and busted lots of tools in the process. Today drills/plasma/torches/grinders come out to play. Just worried about the 4 nutserts, they're in kind of critical spots.  Have to get it looking good for the new 37's and future broken axle parts! ::)

Never purchasing anything with allen/torx heads again.  Ever. And using anti-seize on a ridiculous level as well. I might buy a 55 gallon drum of the stuff.

Going to give powdercoating one more try i guess. Very well established company and they're one town over so if it goes south it's easily fixed. They do a zinc-heavy primer just like our wheel reconditioning guy does and we have spectacular luck with that. Fingers crossed!

wheels have lots fewer unwelded seams. Fingers crossed indeed!

Long overdue update : powdercoating came out beautiful. Hopefully with the better process and lack of salt this thing will look good for years. (Well until i start rolling it and cutting it up)
Now sitting on 37" Interco Truxxs MT's. Finally found a tire size that the stock rubicon doesn't like. 6th is borderline useless until 60mph. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/21/uhynydy5.jpg)

Wouldn't you know it. Sat in the lean-to all winter so no salt and guess what's creeping out of the weld areas on my freshly powdercoated parts.....
Well, no one is getting three whacks at these things. >:(

Did you have metal cloak do the coating again?

Title: Re: Yeah yeah, another TJ.
Post by: jACeL86 on March 22, 2013, 04:29:20 PM
Nope, local place. Metal cloak  would have done it for free, but wanted me to ship it for more money than the local place cost total. I discussed my issues with this new place and he assured me that their process was better. But I have his word on it that if there's issues he'll take care of me. Sucky part is I have to spend half a day pulling it all back off again

I wish my wheel guy did parts as well. I'd trust his process for good 5 years at least. He uses a phenomenal primer. Oh well, I guess I'll just rattle can the crap out of it until it's time to chop the tub!8)

One thing after another.... dead battery: replaced. Still no starting.  Replaced starter: wasn't the problem. Old one works with supplied 12v. (Obviously should have checked first. Whoops) checked all fuses/relays: seem fine.  Read up on an ignition actuator pin common problem : took column apart, pin looks fine.
Next step.... replace ignition?!?!  I hate electricity.
(And rusty powdercoated parts.)

Turning over but no fire? or no crank?
Title: Re: Renamed: Rusty MC
Post by: jACeL86 on March 24, 2013, 08:18:34 PM
No cranking...i was getting a few solenoid clicks here and there, but now seems like all i hear is the relay. (Also kills everything when i hit the key. Cd's have to keep reloading, etc.)

Good power to starter so it has to be upstream of the solenoid wire... ignition or clutch switch I'm guessing?
Title: Re: Renamed: Rusty MC

I was going to suggest clutch switch.  Put your by-pass fuse in and see if it will crank.  Lower left in your glove box fuse panel.

Jumper power straight to solenoid to see if it cranks?  If things go dead or dim at crank, it sure sounds like a bad connection, positive or negative.

No bypass fuse in the 06rubi so I tried the 4lo method. Nothing. I'm not even getting a solenoid click now. Next step ignition I guess since I'm not the biggest fan of tracing wires under the dash/in firewall.

jumper wire across starter relay make it crank?

ASD have power?

Yes, 12v to solenoid connector works. Have not checked the ASD...would that keep it from cranking through?
(Ignition switch ordered either way. It was cheap so a spare will be worth it if that's not the problem.)

ASD will keep it from running but does not affect cranking if memory serves.

*facepalm* well ignition wasn't it so I tore into the wiring like the electrical dummy that I am. Resistance was perfect everywhere but as I rechecked all my ground bolts (loosened, sprayed and tightened) guess what comes off in my hand? The engine side of the grounding strap. Completely out of sight and was holding enough that my gentle tug didn't separate it but the twisting did. >:(

Will know today. Didn't have wire ends I was happy with so some nice beefy battery terminal ones with a huge starter sized wire is going on today. All coated and crap. This is never happening again!

It's alive! Although it didn't go down without a fight. Still had more wiring issues.
