Title: Newbie of the newnies
Post by: itjustmeD on February 28, 2010, 10:13:43 PM
I think that I\'m doing this right. :) I haven\'t even gotten my 4x4 yet. The closest I\'ve gotten to \'4 wheeling\' is taking my Subaru Loyal that got f.u.b.a.r.ed in an accident; out into my friends back lot through the mud, trees, ruts & ditches. Lol O\' ya & a few jumps too. :) Put an ear to ear smile on my face let me tell you. =D Anyways, I\'m in need of a vehicle & I\'ve been looking a round & it is looking promising that I might be able to get an old Cherokee 4x4. So I started cruising around the net & I found my way to your sight & I\'ve really got to say; You all sound like really great bunch of people. :) I\'ve always loved & wanted to get a 4x4 that I could go out & see nature in all of it\'s glory. It\'s just never worked out that way. I hope that I get to go out wheelin\' with you guys some day. In the mean time I\'ll just have to chat.

Found it, thanks!! I will. Do u know any body that has a bumper for a \'92 Cherokee? The Jeep I\'m look to get doesn\'t have one.

You\'ve got a pretty sweet rig. I\'m guessing you\'ve been doing this for a while. Do you also happen to know if anyone ever tried making a 6x6 rig that the two rear drive shafts aren\'t connected? Where all three axles would be free to move as they need.

Welcome.

And the only 6x6 I know of where all three axles were free to move was called the T-Rex, and was based on a Dodge RAM 150 (I believe).

Thanks I just looked at the video\'s & it looks like the rear drive wheels of the T-Rex are directly connected. \'tandem axle design\' isn\'t that where the drive shaft connects to the first rear axle & then connects to the second rear drive axle? I never did learn the terming of all of this stuff.
That\'s not the design that I was thinking. If I understand the phrase \'tandem axle design\' correctly. Mine would be more of a \'parallel axle design\'. Rear drive would be two separate drive shafts coming from the transfer case that would connect one to each of the rear drive axles. Thus not limiting the travel of either drive shaft.
I\'d also thought of having the third axle be a steering axle working with the front axle to maneuver. But I\'m concerned with the abuse that the rear axle steering linkage would endure from the strain of a climb.

Thanks Wingman. Sweet rig!

The Jeep that I\'m looking to get is a 4 door 6cyl 4.0 H.O. auto drive-line. What does \'H.O. auto drive-line\' mean?
Title: Re: Newbie of the newnies

High Output

What are the specs/price mileage on the jeep you are looking at?

We can offer some suggestions if it is a good price, year, good starting project, etc.

High output is good start to any project! :D I don\'t know much about it yet. I haven\'t seen it yet, I\'m having a hard time getting a ride to go see it. I\'m in Angola & it\'s in Springville. \'92 Jeep Cherokee 4 door 6cyl 4.0 H.O. \"auto drive-line works great body is pretty bad\". It has almost new 235 snow tires all around. The guy I\'m buying it from doesn\'t know a lot bout it either; he bought it from a long time friend of his. He did say that it\'s mechanically in good shape, will start right up, drive, shift & go into 4x4 all with no prob. The only bad it\'s  missing it\'s rear bumper & the body is pretty well rusted. I\'ll try posting the pics that I have of it. It hit a dear but only broke the one turn light. It has a home made metal push guard the previous owner put on when he took both bumper off. The current owner is going to talk to his friend & find out more about it today. I don\'t know what the mileage is. The price - $350

There are other XJ guys who can chime in about the concerns of unit body construction and where to look for problems.  Keep us posted.

Are there any XJ guys out there would be willing to to chime in. I\'d really appreciate any help that they would be willing to offer, Also if any of them happen to have a rear bumper, stock or other. If any one has a front one to? I\'m not sure if the push bar that\'s on the front now would be enough (legally) Don\'t need any hassling by the cops.

Looks pretty rough, but the price is good for a runner.

What are your plans for it?
Daily Driver?
Wheeler only?
Show vehicle?

Are you planning to fix the rust? It seems extensive, and would be a lot of work, but, if the rust is not an issue, than this could be a good fit for you.
Title: Re: Newbie of the newnies
Post by: itjustmeD on March 02, 2010, 11:12:39 AM
First off it\'ll be my daily driver (it\'ll b my only vehicle) cuz quite frankly I\'ve gotta stretch (as in rent money is getting used to pay for it) even just to buy the thing. But as my fiancee & I work & improve our finances it\'ll become a on/off (probably more off) :D road champ that my daughter\'ll enjoy too! I\'m not interested in making a pretty show piece but I probably will fix some of the rust (like the sharp pieces) probably not spots like the surface rust though. So long as it doesn\'t pose a danger or significant problem; I like the rust, gives a vehicle character.

I\'d actually like it to end up looking something like this pic that I found. With some other additions, like:

a pair of those disappearing step rails. (Make it easier to get into. Gotta make the fiancee happy), Wheel well flares, Skid plates, air compressor, air tanks, & air tool set all on board, additional rear & side lighting, small roof rack, Roof top tent & I\'ll probably think of other stuff later. ;D

if thats what the rockers and fenders look like i\'d hate to see what the floorpans look like under the carpet, and more than likely theres a weekspot in the unibody too if the cancer is that bad.if it were me i\'d keep looking
Title: Re: Newbie of the newnies
Post by: itjustmeD on March 02, 2010, 03:41:54 PM
What else should I look for besides the floor panels & the uni-body when I check it out?
Title: Re: Newbie of the newnies
Post by: luvmyxj on March 02, 2010, 03:49:04 PM
mostly front end stuff,if you can get the tires off the ground shake the tire if theres any vertical movement the ball joints could be bad, even worse wheel bearings they are not cheap.grap the driveshafts and axle shafts if theres any play in those the ujoints are probably bad.check for any unibody cracks where the steering box mounts thats a common spot

Does anyone live near springville?

Maybe one of us could go look at the jeep when Danon goes to see it.

I recently went looking for 4x4s to build from and honestly from the looks of things $350 bucks that jeep would be a good weekend wheeler I honestly wouldnt put the money into it if it is rusted as bas as it looks. Im going to give you advice that was given to me save a litttle more money and buy something that needs less work. even if you look in the $1500 range more likely than not youll find someting better suited to build. look on craigslist and the saturday super ads i still find deals there. I got a k5 blazer for $500 that is in decent shape but its gonna be my driveway plow truck. I guess my bottom line is keep looking around $350 bucks is cheap but it makes you think why so cheap? because of the rust and god knows what else
Title: Re: Newbie of the newnies
Post by: itjustmeD on March 03, 2010, 11:22:13 AM
Ya I know, a $350 vehicle is a $350 vehicle but I\'m not in a position to save anymore. We need a vehicle, I can\'t get to my doctors appointments, my daughter to her doctors & my fiancee can\'t get to her job to work the shifts that she suppose to. Where worried, how long are they going to keep a person on that can\'t work the shifts, how long before they get fed up & find someone that can. To be honest were about a month from getting our utilities shut off. We NEED a vehicle! I don\'t care what but we need something. Sadly enough we can\'t really even afford this $350. But I don\'t see any other way to even stay afloat let alone starting to get ahead. Any who. Sorry. I know it\'s just life.

Like the song says: \"sounds like life to me\"

Thanks for advice if I do get it I\'ll just plan on getting something better when were able & then spend the money & do the work to that one. This one can be my practice Jeep. :D

Hay Mad Mike, Thanks! but which Craigslist are you looking on? I couldn\'t find a 92 Ford Explorer on the Rochester, Buffalo or chautauqua sites. I did however email the 2 email addresses that you posted. Honestly I don\'t care what it is or what it looks like car, truck, or horse & buggy (kidding). Runs, legal to drive on the street & safe for my daughter to be in honestly that\'s my criteria. As far as it being 4x4, ya I\'d be happy as a pig in (you know what) n I\'d be grinning ear to ear; but it\'s not what I\'d want it\'s what my family needs. They just need something that\'ll help get us out of this hole that we\'re quickly sinking into. O\' I forgot it does need to be automatic, my girl doesn\'t know how to drive a stick. I tried teaching her once on my old car, n ya, that didn\'t go well.

& honestly, I can\'t begin to express how much it means to me you all being so nice & trying so hard to help a guy that you don\'t know but from few emails.

From all of us thank you!

I don\'t suppose someone out there might have something that they might be willing to part with for less then what they might have been originally where asking? I\'ve only got $400 plus hopefully enough extra to register & insure it.

I\'m not picky, I\'d love a 4x4 but it\'s not a prerequisite, just something reliable, that\'s an automatic, that can help get me & my family where we need to go so we can finally get out of this dam sink hole.

If it\'ll help, I\'ll even sign paperwork of a legal debt to the seller for the balance.

There seems to be an empty right seat with someone during a trail ride.  Lack of a 4x4 or cash doesn\'t necessarily mean you can\'t wheel...

That\'d be sweet. Only problem is with not having my own car yet; I\'m stuck looking locally, Buffalo Craigslist only, & even some this area I still wouldn\'t be able to get to. Unfortunately, non of my friends are quite as fond of road trips as I am. I\'ve been checking & none of them even wanted to even entertain the idea. :)

hey at least its american and if its got the 5.0 v8 those are good motors to use for a trail truck or mudder project
Title: Re: Newbie of the newnies
Post by: itjustmeD on March 22, 2010, 10:35:00 AM
Na, it\'s got a 4.6 with almost 200k miles. Still a V8 but hopefully still a good engine. I had seen a \'96 town car (1 year newer) with 356k miles on it & still going. I think my \'95 has the same motor as the \'96.

I actually had thought of using it for a project down the road. 8in lift, 4x4, set of 44 super swampers, & some serious articulation. I\'d be wheelin\' in style. lol

not bad at all, you can fit a family of 8 in there!

Family of 8 ?!? lol We\'re only a family of three - well five if you count the two cats. But it\'ll fit 5 or 6 people with out a problem.

Though, if you did like when I was a kid n just stacked people, you could probably fit 10 + 4 or 5 more if they road in the trunk. :) I remember more then once fitting 8 people into a Chevette.
The town car is huge! I took that picture today & realized that my car is a good deal longer then my neighbors pick-up truck.
