Title: Atom Smasher
Post by: Ryan_25 on November 25, 2009, 03:26:15 PM
Its a small 2-seat rear engine buggy.

The plans are

1.6 Tracker Motor and auto trans running on propane

Stock Tracker t-case with my Samurai 6.5 T-case connect to it

Air Shocks, 16\" Radflos in the front and 18\" Fox in the rear.

Use my Dana 44s

Double triangulated 4-links at both ends

Full hydro steering

I hope to have it out on the trails by the end of January.

Very little progress has been made here. Parts have been ordered and sitting inside the buggy. I should devote some time to getting the thing rolling.

I have made a ton of progress on the buggy.

The front axle is done. I got the motor to run, swapped all the accessories over to the new motor. Swapped in a larger Delco alternator.

It harder that it seems to swap over the v-belt set up from the 1.3 to the 1.6. New holes have to be drilled to get the crank pulley to bolt on.

Today I hope to get the motor finished and start on the hydro steering.

I thought we couldn\'t stand up the propane tanks?

Atom runs. It idles and shift thru all the gears. Man that low range is low. It is going to be some funness when this thing get on the rocks.

I have seen them standing up. I dont see why not.
Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: smichaelR22 on December 16, 2009, 12:47:09 PM
my tank doesnt suck liquid standing up as found in Virgina at big dogs.  it will idle all day long, but wiht any load it will start to freeze up or starve the engine
Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: MrMindless on December 16, 2009, 12:56:31 PM
I thought the feed tube went to the bottom corner of the tank so they could be run on their side in one orientation, or standing up.  maybe it\'s in the middle  though?  hmm.
Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: smichaelR22 on December 16, 2009, 01:28:50 PM
i thought they had a flexable clunk to run in any orientation like most weadwackers or chainsaws have.  All tanks have a key to line up on the bracket to be in only one orientation when horrizontal also.
Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: MrMindless on December 17, 2009, 01:03:08 PM
I didn\'t think they had a clunk since they do have the fixed orientation.  I could be wrong.

Rig looks great. I\'ve been wantin to do up a single seater for a while now. Was wondering about the out put rotation. What did you do with the engine turned around backwards and all. I get confused when things go from front to back.

I couldn\'t figure it out for a while until someone enlightened me - you just flip the axles upside down.

Post by: Camo1Ton on December 19, 2009, 02:06:42 PM
I thought about that, but isn\'t the pressure put on the backside or wrong side of the teeth on the ring and pinion? Like backing up under a load breaks teeth on the gears. Or is this an area for reverse cut gears I hear about all the time.
Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: smichaelR22 on December 19, 2009, 07:22:24 PM
ya, they gears are weaker now in forward, but its 2000lb buggy with 90 hp.  i think other things will break first.

Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: gCracker on March 02, 2010, 11:04:01 AM
truck and trailer to somewhere close.  I can ask organizers if there is a closer spot than our meeting place(ch 8) to park trailer(s)  or I am sure you could drop it off then park the trailer at ch 8, then get a ride to pick up trailer when finished.  I am sure a club member would hang around Atom to never leave it unattended.

Yes, it runs on propane. Just like a forklift. Smells funny too.

Duh! I forgot about forklifts running on propane. Your right it does smell weird. lol
Can a vehicle be made to run on gas flip a switch to propane, or are there two many differences? Like switching an engine from gasoline & diesel?
Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: Wingman on March 05, 2010, 09:56:17 AM
Propane to gasoline works, but gasoline to diesel is much different technology.

Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: Ryan_25 on September 29, 2010, 08:36:37 AM
Atom has been doing very well the last couple months. I upgraded the front drive shaft to a custom build one from HAD. I changed the rear output of the t-case to accept a 1310 joint, and got rid of the very very small Samurai joint. ALso made a double wall mid shaft to eliminate all the parts that kept breaking.

This happened after a pretty hard roll.

After watching Smike in the last RcRocs race I decided that it would be a good idea to spend a bunch of money and try racing.

I ordered a t3/t4 turbo for the little 1.6l motor and plan to put it on and go really really fast. :-)

The next couple weeks will be late nights and long weekends getting it legal for racing. Firewalls and window nets are a requirement. The turbo swap will take the longest, so anyone that wants to help let me know.

I will be running alone, no co-driver. I dont have enough room in the buggy to have another person and tools.

My goal is to have it done by October 12 for the race on the 16th.

Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: Ryan_25 on November 08, 2010, 10:15:31 AM
Now that winter is coming I am planning some upgrades to this machine.

I am swapping in a 2.0 Suzuki motor out of a wrecked 1999 Chevy tracker. I bout the whole truck for less than I could find a good motor for. Thanks to Mindless for picking up for me.

I will keep the turbo and us it on the new motor.

I am going to use a stand alone engine managment system called MegaSquirt. http://ms3efi.com/

I have found a local guy that is a MS guru and has a chassis Dyno (in Honeyoe). He will help me in tuning the MS and motor when i get it all installed.

I am hoping for around 160 hp with the new set-up.

Ditching propane and going to gas.

Also planning on doing some shock tuning and air bumps this winter. And some new axle shafts, if I have any money left. :-)

Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: Ryan_25 on November 08, 2010, 07:23:17 PM
I would swap in a rear 9\" out of an early Bronco. But custom 9s are too much for this winter. Some chromo shaft in the front like Cora has would be great.

I really really like my tires so I am going to run them for a while. BFG Krawlers have too many sidewall failures and KRTs are too much coin.
Title: Re: Atom Smasher
Post by: Ryan_25 on November 23, 2010, 10:14:18 PM
It was a great season of wheeling, I learned a lot about driving and what my buggy could do. And a lot about what it could not do. I am lacking power, hill climbs are not possible with this thing. If its wet and I need wheel speed then it just wont do it.

SO I started the tear down yesterday. I cut out all the tube I welded in for the propane tank and cage around it.

Then tonight I started to get the motor ready to come out.

All I have left to do is unbolt it and pull it out.

Stripped the gears out of the transfer case on the first outing. The new motor at least double the power of the old one.
