Title: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on November 22, 2009, 06:43:09 AM
waiting for my chassis to be delivered.  Decided on a prefab over buying a bender, notcher, and materials, the difference of the deal wasn\'t worth my time.

Plans:

tons
42\" (new poly H1 bead locks)
SBC355/TH350/NP205
Propane
16\" SAW air shocks
full hydro
4 links front and rear.
corbea ss seats / RJS 5 points
HDPE belly.
ARB rear / rear cutting brakes (later)
under 3200lbs.

Is the chassis fabbed locally?

Going to return the CJ5 to street?

Is 3200 lbs even doable with tons, etc?

Very cool!

its made by a company in CA, Twizted Fabrication.  it was old stock that was an ebay auction.

its being freighted here.

75% of the CJ will end up in this buggy, so it will be retired/parted out.

the chassis weighs 390lbs so yes i think its doable.

got the chassis in the shop

motor mounted tonight after some eyeballing and placement of crucial parts.  i think its going to work out nicely with the TH350 / divorced NP205.

thanks to some help from eric last week, we dragged in some axles and i have started with the rear links.  looks like im using some of the CJ links and going to go DOM round all the way.

motor, trans, case, rear lower link mounts done so far.

Also, thanks for the hardware bin, from bill at Fastenal

rear axle linked and air shocked.  looks good.

Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: MrMindless on December 29, 2009, 04:51:33 AM
I like your upper mounts a lot.  I think your lowers are going to want to Twizt the tube, they seem awful long.  Might just be the pictures.

are you going to stay with that little shaft showing at ride height?  I figured you\'d leave a bit more compression in there to keep it even lower.  Looks like the tabs are already there for the shocks though so I guess RUN IT :)
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: Ryan_25 on December 29, 2009, 05:17:02 AM
Get the tires on it. It is going to look awesome with the 42\"s on it.
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on December 29, 2009, 05:31:24 AM
the shock mounts im leaving tacked and plan to fully weld after tires are on both axles and im happy with ride height. (also plan to weld them with the chassis upsidown)  i may end up moving the shock tabs on the axles, because the angles arent quiet where id really like them, but usable.

its decieving from the pic, the lower links actually point down toward the chassis.  its pretty low as it is now.

with 42\"s on it, it shouldnt be much taller than 6\'4\" if my measurments are correct.

about the lower link mounts.  ya, i thought about that.  best i could compromise for trying to use existing links.   i think it will be ok.  if not, once the case mount is fully welded in, i plan to run tube from the dash down to it, and could do the same in the rear, to the flats of the lower mounts.   also, i have to make a structure to hold the HDPE i plan on putting under it, so that could be used to give the tube a little help where its needed.

need some more DOM from SMC.

Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on December 29, 2009, 05:32:05 AM
im thinking i have alot more fab work before i want four 42\" tires to trip over :)
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: MrMindless on December 29, 2009, 07:03:26 AM
I\'m not talking taller, I\'m talking less sit-in.  more shaft showing but same height.
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on December 29, 2009, 07:14:47 AM
o gotcha, its at 5\" up travel, which is more than the CJ had and most buggys i see do.

the beauty of air shocks, i can make it what i want with changing tabs.

i got half done, and almost forgot to start to pay attention to propane tank mounting options.  still good though.

going to run them in a \"V\" with a tool bag /cooler grate in the center.

Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: Wingman on December 31, 2009, 04:03:51 AM
Upper links look farther apart than before.  Will it be enough triangulation or will you be running a panhard too?
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on December 31, 2009, 05:52:58 AM
triangulation is defiantly a concern on the front. Im trying to get the most as possibly, but i just only have so much room to keep my ride hight and up travel where i want it.  the lowers should have a lot more, hopefully if i can find room for a driveshaft too.

thinking im going to go rear CV shaft and retube the expensive bits i have from the scrambler shafts i had fleetpride make me and go back to round shafts.
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on January 01, 2010, 03:04:55 PM
Mindless:

\"Can\'t run a panhard and a 4 link.  geometry can\'t work.  you could run a watts link.... but I don\'t think you could get the needed travel out of it.

that axle is way forward.  wow.

looking great.\"

smike:

Mike i managed to delete your post and cut and paste it to repost my post!

well here are updates:

got all 4 tires on and its looking good.  down to two jack stands.

started working on dash tubes and got seats mounted more how i liked.

Looking good, smike!

I can\'t believe that fits in your \"shop\"
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: luvmyxj on January 01, 2010, 07:38:37 PM
looks like youll have to go more than 5\" of uptraval, looks like sitting pretty low at full bump
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on January 01, 2010, 10:05:26 PM
the scrambler was 104\", the CJ was 108\"  this thing is about 120\" so ya its a little longer.

I like where its sitting now, but i might move the rear shock mounts up.  i have about 6\" more stuff before i have any clearance issues in the rear.  the front is tight and still needs lowers around a driveshaft.

Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: ollllllo on January 02, 2010, 03:57:11 AM
looking good.
im running 4\"up travel and bump stops, and haven\'t had any issues. low and stable is great. i built mine @ 110\"WB and i love it. so much better than stock CJ WB
with all that clearance you have w the tube chassis, 120 WB will be killer. better get selectable locker for rock runs tight trails.
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on January 02, 2010, 05:45:12 AM
im thinking im going to put the open diff gears back in the rear axle and put cutting brakes in till i can afford an ARB, or save it for 9\" builds.
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: ollllllo on January 02, 2010, 04:34:42 PM
other than the obvious, is the cutting brake able to help wit the open diff? in other words, if you grab left brake to stop a spinning wheel, will it transfer power to the other wheel?  aiding in forward movement? seems like alot of work. weld it and twin stix if you can with that case
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: Wingman on January 02, 2010, 04:43:22 PM
Cutting brake should work like that.  Same thing on big tractors.  And you definitely can twin-stick a NP205!  Do both.
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: MrMindless on January 03, 2010, 03:36:21 PM
a cutting brake with an open rear will absolutely pivot you on the stopped rear tire - the other tire will drive at 2x the speed along with the front pulling you around.  it almost makes twin sticking pointless.
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: ollllllo on January 03, 2010, 06:01:06 PM

what i meant was, if you have an open rear diff and the drivers tire loses traction and spins, cant you pull on drivers cutting brake and transfer to pass side to aid in forward movement.
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: MrMindless on January 03, 2010, 06:31:29 PM
yup absolultely.

question is whether you get tired of doing that.....  and it might not work so well on a big fast climb (I\'m thinking of Trail 5 and Tombstone type stuff)
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: ollllllo on January 05, 2010, 03:46:52 AM
yup, my point exactly.
i seem to recall memories in my head of smike getting angry at his open diffs on the scrambler couple years back.
then welding them solid.
put a detroit in the rear (cheapest 14bolt locker i found) or keep it welded for now

your build is looking really good, way more progress than mine, pulled expedition into shop for a simple or I thought 3 inch body lift, pulled front bumper to expose a very rotted out radiator support, and two very bady rotted front body mounts, needless to say ended uo with 1000$ in tools, and trucks been in garage for a week now, welding and mods are not my fortae. and still have one broken rusted bolt on driver front mount that i can not get out, need to get some oxygen for the torch and see if im good enough to cut it out with out burning the truck up, hopefully monday or tuesday it will be done, those are my only 2 days off from work, thinking i may have to call in some help to rebuild the front end this summer or put in a new front clip, just to cold right now to do it, and i need my truck back

hey mike how much hdpe do you need? sizes and thickness? or would ppe aka polypropylene work i have some 3/4\" that i\'m doing nothing with and maybe some 1/2\" dont remember...  also the guy who i\'m looking for the combine axles for sell hdpe and both of him and myself weld it...

ps buggy looks :censor: great!

i need like a 28\"x32\" ish piece 1/2\" would be great.  not sure ill have to look up what PPE is
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: djberg on February 08, 2010, 04:07:33 PM
man you are in luck well kind of... the biggest piece of 1/2 ppe i have is 27 1/4\"x 33 1/2\"...

the difference between ppe and hdpe are:

1. hdpe is cheaper(or so it was but not any more i have just learned)

2. ppe has a better heat rating but only like 40 degrees

3. ppe is non- porous(no good to r.t.v.)

4. hdpe is porous

chemistry resistance is equal between the both of them.

really the heat rating is why ppe costs more cause it\'s main usage is for tank building for metal plating lines(what i do for work).

http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=31859&catid=711

http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=31836&catid=705

or if you want hdpe i could look into a local price for ya(save ya on shipping)

i think that might work, subframe rails i think are 26.5\" apart after more carful measuring.

whats the price on something like that?

McMaster, i was spending about 80$

just looking for something to help slide over rocks and stuff on the belly.  i have never done something like this before so if the price is right, ill give it a shot.

thanks!
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: djberg on February 09, 2010, 02:15:13 PM
ok so as i looked at your frame, those rails are the closest points to mount to, if this was my rig especially since it\'s nice i\'d make a little sub frame for down there. cause one of three things will most likely happen, first is if you get high sided, it will either break the sheet of poly, flex it enough to bend the mounting hardware or rip the hard ware through the edges of the plastic. just my 2 cents.

but any ways who\'s driving? to get or deliver? and do you still have that aussie? if so what do you want for it cash + poly? or make me an offer delivered or picked up.

dj
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on February 09, 2010, 03:32:43 PM
ya, it will have a sub frame, i wasn\'t planing on building that part until the rest is finished, its taken apart, and i can flip the chassis upside down, easier to work on, and i have been leaving the upside down welding to do anyway.

I sold the axles as a set, so locker is gone. i could meet you in buffalo sometime, or have someone pick it up for me.

mike, havent heard any more from you on the build. hows it going, im patiantly waiting to see new pics, i was talking to a guy i use to wheel with in ohio, hes selling his chassy this year and got a new buggy, only thing he is takeing out is the motor,  easy enough to replace hes running a 22r toy motor, showed wife the pics of it i may be the new owner.it will be easier to trailer around than a full size truck, and the expy wont hate me for it either. be nice if he got his replacement soon,  dont see how ill be able to wheel it this year, but def next. cant wait

:shock:damn, no good i\'ve been waiting for updates... bummer on the tranny, maybe you should have cut of the lower portion of the frame to get it through the door, instead of the top. then used quick connects (ford cab style) thus just, meh mental design(my own) fail. good luck getting the tranny fixed/replaced lol...

ps how bout some pics of that fancy trailer?

a few clicks and a new trans with some other goodies is on its way from summit.

havent had much updates on the buggy.  its been to rausch twice and a few times local.

Made it up jotters and both sides of trail 5 hill climb.  we also did crawl daddy at a pretty good pace.

got some motor noise, a dented rear driveshaft, a blown johnny joint, and now an over heating issue.

5.38\"s, chomo shafts, drive flanges, stage 8 lock nut kits ordered today.

buggy is doing good.

have a few issues to work out for Virginia, and then the race!

new motor running ok, still running hot at sustained high speed with rpm over 5000

Good deal! Rausch rox!

How was new gearing?
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: MrMindless on April 19, 2010, 09:44:55 AM
he hates the 5.38s Erik.

high range isn\'t low enough, and low range is too low.

It really needs about 6.5-7:1 gearing I think.  5.38 is as deep as the 14b goes though.  on the other hand high range is now pretty useful - Mike just wants more juice on tap than there is to offer in high.

His handling really makes me jealous.  after some seat time in that, I think my priorities have changed.  I want comfy seats! :)
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on April 19, 2010, 10:03:06 PM
ya, i dont like the 5.38\'s at all.  4.10\'s were way better for power and speed range in low for racing.

on the other hand the 5.38\'s will be easier on the trans for crawling low range, and force me to not use as much fuel go fasting in high range.

Post by: smichaelR22 on August 10, 2010, 09:53:54 PM
i suppose its about time to give the story of the little miss hap that happened a few weeks ago.  Mike and I were geared up with helmets and braces doing some hot laps around a moto cross track we got invited to.  the goal was to get comfortable driving with neck braces as the next race required them while RCQ did not.  i had lost an alternator belt earlier in the day doing some rec wheeling which we had repaired.  im guessing the alternator had seized up from some heavy water soaking the day before, but didnt much matter...

we came out of a turn on the last long straight hard into it and i felt the lost of steering, the buggy had thrown the power steering belt.  the hydraulics locked up, and we slide all fours locked up into a tree that didnt move non the less.

the damage:

two patachable holes in driver front tire
rim badly bent and torn
highsteer arm ripped off knuckle
kingpin bushings crushed / separated Knuckle / parts lost
lower driverside link candy caned
upper driver link bent, johnny joint threads sheared
upper passenger johnny joint bent
passenger front air shock shaft bent
both front upper shock mount tabs tweaked
oil fiter crushed
exhaust crushed
transmission cracked in half in two places
lower link chassis mounts bent and crushed tube
both motor mounts tweaked, cracked tube

Mike and i figure we hit the tree going about 25-30mph which didnt really seem all that hard, until we got out and saw the damage.  After we hit, and the smoke poured we both unbelted, jumped out, saw the trans and oil pan engulfed in fire, pulled the extinquishers and gave it a couple shots to put it out.

as of tonight, one link re-fabricated out of 2x2x.25\" square tube, spare joints replaced to get it rolling.  motor and trans pulled, front subframe cut off, new tube twice as thick cut and fit, new gusseted and trused mounts in the works.  the plan is to cut out and replace everything that failed with something bigger, better, and stronger.  new shock shaft on order, along with some air bumps, and working on getting trans guts swapped to a new case if possible.

Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on August 10, 2010, 10:03:15 PM
motor / trans pull, all work being done in the enclosed trailer....
Title: Re: twizted buggy build
Post by: smichaelR22 on August 19, 2010, 07:48:45 AM
its been a long week.  Lower subframe refabricated.  buggy back on links.  100$ trans hopefully to end up as good spare when i get my good trans back rebuilt installed. Motor mounts refabricated, HVHP oil pump in motor put in, motor installed. crushed exhaust fixed.  Motor wired and plumbed less radiator last night.

all thats left is cooling system, front drive shaft, trans linkage, hook the battery up, fill fluids, rebuild passenger kingpin, and hang tins.

Also have to take the alternator in / replace it.  wasnt charging correctly before.

Race prep for this weekend continues!

tree bars added
Front axle side ram mount bored and sleved to eliminate slop
Both Knuckles bored out, tapped to 5/8\"s bolts for high steer arms
Front ram gaurd replaced with a bigger one

Buggy is having starting issues that i think are related to a dieing starter, undersized power cables, and an under sized master disconnect.

Tonights list:

Fill tanks
Fit tins to tree bars and mount
swap new optima in
swap new master disconnect in
replace / add 2g wire
wash
load trailer / pack race gear.

I\'m not sure if your rules allow but when wiring roadrace cars I use a starter solenoid relay very much like the one found in a CJ but rated for \"continuous on\"  A simple toggle switch is used as the accessible switch for race officials, the nice part is you can have multiple switches to kill power. Those crappy plastic switches with the red key are a DNF waiting to happen, on cars where that switch was spec we replaced them several times a season as preventative maintenance.

ya, i have burned out two cheap ones this week, i got a 500amp one to put in tonight that should be good.

everything but the front winch goes through it.  im probably pushing 30-40 amps alone in electric fans at this point between the three of them.

Ill have to check them but my rears are like 38\" and the fronts are like 45\" i think

i would keep them in the 36-40\" lenght if you can.

my front lowers are just too long and 2\" 250wall box was bent after one rec wheeling trip...

wow, you bent the square tube?!

And square tube is stronger than round tube.  Nuts!

Thanks for the numbers.   Shorter links would be better for me too.  It would allow for a larger skid plate/link mount.

Ill re-work the numbers.
