Title: 92 toyota
Post by: etk300ex on April 05, 2009, 07:12:43 PM
Heres my new toyota project

Details: 92, 4cyl, 150k, seems to have been pretty well taken care of, I have a 6\" stack of service records since new!  In the past 4yrs its had new timing chain, radiator, calipers, drums, exhuast, tires (28\'s :-D), brake lines, gas lines.  The bad, grinding coming from rear end.

Phase 1: 34\'s, trimming, bed bob, bumpers, sliders, skid plates

Phase 2: SAS, 3\"-4\" lift, 38\'s, gears

I have friends with some spare 4 cyl 3rds if the rear is eating itself. What gears in it?

Looks pretty good - and it\'s the right color! :)

I think if I shorted the Dak I\'ll probably be aiming for the 120\" neighborhood so we\'ll all be in good company.  yall will just need to get some tires to justify the length :)

Title: Re: my new 92 toyota
Post by: etk300ex on May 03, 2009, 06:39:44 PM
Got the diff armor welded on the axle then welded the diff and got the 3rd member back in.  Went to bolt up the drive shaft and the new 3rd members bolt pattern is not the same as the old...

Can I unbolt this bolt and just switch the flanges or will it screw something up inside?
Title: Re: my new 92 toyota
Post by: smichaelR22 on May 03, 2009, 09:49:12 PM
im not a toyota guy, but that nut probably sets the pinion bearing pre load.  get a \"feel\" for the resistance before you take it off, and when you put the other one on make it the same (if the spines match)

iff all else fails, look it up on the internet and get a small tork wrench

Looks great.

Good decision on the flange. :-)
Title: Re: my new 92 toyota
Post by: etk300ex on May 11, 2009, 07:05:16 AM
I think it needs a test run and some bumper/skidplate work before it goes to rousch.  Just the rears welded.

Yeah, i took the flange off the old diff, investigated a little bit and realized I had no idea what I was doing and went the drilling route ha ha.

get plates on it, street drive it this week to work out any bugs, and bring it to Rausch!

Got all the loose ends tied up this weekend, bed is bondo\'d and primered, 02 sensor welded back in, trimmed up the bumper and put some stretegic dents in the firewall and it turns now :)

took it out for a little test drive in the woods everything seems to be working well

Title: Re: my new 92 toyota
Post by: etk300ex on May 27, 2009, 12:37:39 PM
The toyota did awesome this weekend, very impressed with what is goes through, specialy with practically bald tires.

Started to overheat at the end of saturday and sunday, hopefully just needs flushout, new thermostat, and new water/fluid.

Total build price so far:
truck: $600
rear 3rd: $30
oil/fluids/filters: $100
rims: $60
tires: $60
muffler: $30
diff armor: $10
sold stock tires: -$150
Total = $740

Driving it = Priceless lol

So I flushed it out twice, the rad was completely packed with dirt and isn\'t in the best condition, but filled it up and went for a little test drive around the woods and it seems to be good.

Title: Re: my new 92 toyota
Post by: etk300ex on June 01, 2009, 03:04:03 PM
I dont think so, I want to get one more test drive in before I lug it all the way to PA.

Still needs rear bumper, sliders, and a new t-case cross member before it goes to rousch, which i\'m starting on next weekend.

Brakes suck need to look into that, pedal goes to floor, there bled, and no leaks

Need some new trailer straps

probably some other stuff too...

and a second job lol

Bumpers finished, found a reese hitch for a 79 chevy van on craigslist and mated it to the 2\"x2\".  Came out pretty good, should be bale to pick up the whole truck by it. Not quite sure why I painted it though, should of let it rust to match the rest of the truck  :-D

t-case back together, needs to go in the truck.  Finish installing shocks and it should be ready to go.

Front shock hoops and shocks welded/installed

Had the t-case about 1/2\" from being installed, turns out there were a couple of different shift rods in toyota forward shift cases, the ones from the 85 case were about 1\" too long and bottoming out in the tranny.  Me and smike swapped the rods with my 92 (stock case) monday night and its ready to go back in...again

did a little research, the G52/G54 trans requires the longer forward type t/case shifting rods. These are only found on 84-88\' G carb t/cases

just incase anyone cares  :lol1:

Need to do a little resaearch and make sure the sending unit will work.  Do I need a regulator?  Do I need anything special for the vent?
Title: Re: 92 toyota
Post by: ollllllo on March 15, 2010, 07:05:39 PM
Good prices.

On my Cj i just had a main, return, and a vent on top. Everything was fairly simple, just remember to install a filter before and after the pump.

I didnt run a sending unit.

I used a ruler!
 :-D

But id imagine with your electrical background, you\'ll figure out what the correct resistance is supposed to be for the gauges you have.

2 filters well at least the one before the pump will keep the crap out of the pump and keep it from failure the second one id say clean fuel for your injectors

I wasn\'t telling him how to plumb his fuel system, I was telling him how simple the fuel cell hookup system was on mine! I\'m sorry if I have very limited knowledge of fuel injection systems. Just trying to help add something to his efforts with what little info that I did gain while doing my own research. Your advice was so much more informative.

Got the new stuff installed this weekend.  The new springs are super stiff and it sits up a couple inches high in the rear, hopefully it settles a bit.  We\'ll see how it does this weekend, maybe pull out a leaf or 2 if its still too stiff.

Still planning on doing a buggy leaf and changing the shock mounting, but wanted to keep this project as simple as could be to be sure its ready for big dogs this weekend :)

Springs are pretty stiff, think I will remove a leaf.

Had some fuel delivery problems on saturday, randomly will run out of fuel and die.  I can hear the pump running, got to be a fuel filter, need to investigate.

Lost 4wheel drive on saturday, pulled the hubs off to try and diagnose the problem, didnt see anything so put it back together and it fixed itself.

Did pretty damn good other than that.  I would really like to get a locker up front.  Torn between spending money on the toyota axles or upgradeing???

that truck is doing awesome considering the lack of tire tread.

Post by: etk300ex on May 01, 2010, 09:37:46 PM
Pulled the fuel filter and it was packed full with foam from the cell, not quite sure what\'s up with that.  I would think the foam would hold up being that\'s what it\'s made for, hopefully that\'s a 1 time thing.  Anyways my fuel problem should be fixed.

Re-ran all the gas lines, didn\'t like how it was done before.  Trimmed the front fenders, adjusted the steering, changed tcase oil, all new drive shaft bolts and installed the new shocks.

Guess I can\'t upload pics from my iPod, stay tuned.

Title: Re: 92 toyota
Post by: etk300ex on May 24, 2010, 07:22:04 AM
Re-did the front leaf packs this weekend, the stiffer front leafs that were under the rear leafs were starting to bend them.  I took my stock rears and cut them down and added them now I\'m running:

82 rear main
82 rear 2nd
82 rear 3rd
92 rear main cut down
92 rear 2nd cut down
82 front 4th cut down

It seems to work much better from some back yard testing.  Have a few more inches up travel and the rear seems to be flexing more now.  I\'m thinking the old front set up was to weak to flex the rear?

Next week tackling the rear; plan is to move the rear axle ahead about 4\" and add a buggy leaf.

Swapped my other set of $50 rims and tires on at and attempt to get wider.  Rims are a lot wider and a lot more back spacing, or is that less back spacing? Anyway I think shes around 6\" wider, should have measured but I\'m not that smart.  Yes those are 38.5\'s Hawgs :lol1:

edit: 1st pic hawg left, swamper right

Lots of plans tossed around this winter:

1) Tons. Figured I got $1100 into my front toy axle, and need another $1000 to make them solid :-o. Should of went with tons right off the batt. But decided its too late now, I\'d lose my butt on selling them, lesson learned. I\'ll keep wheeling these until they break.

2) Auto. Really, really wished I had an auto at big dogs.  I\'d need a A340f toy trans, unknown bell housing to bolt up to the 22re, marlin v6 to gear driven t-case adapter, 23 spline t-case input, top shift kit, shifter controls, who knows miscellaneous.  Nope, too much $ for this pile.

3) Duals. All ready have an extra t-case in trade for a pitcher I think, thanks mindless. Just need a dual adapter and a top shift kit, new cross member which I should do anyway, and rear shaft which I need anyway. Its the next best thing to an auto, this will probably happen next trail gear sale.

4) Hydro. It would be nice but steering would be better if I moved the steering box ahead and put a full length pitman arm on there. Meh, more wheeling money.

5) Lower? Shorten the front shackle and 1-1/2\" or so (I like the spring pack as is) and pull a couple leaves out of the back (really stiff anyway).

What needs to get done:
1) PS cooler
2) rear shaft
3) move steering box ahead 2-3\"
4) install seats, buy harnesses.  Safety first :-D
5) quiet that fuel pump down, way annoying!
6) 5th stud mod on knuckles

Working on some tail/brake lights on this hog since that probably the safe thing to do lol.  Also hoping maybe a certain person might notice me stopping instead of looking at the ladies and not rear end me again :-P

That led me on a ridiculous short chase and had to rip the whole damn dash apart.  I finally found in the gauge cluster.  But I also fixed a lot of shoody last minute wiring that I\'ve done in the past so it wasn\'t so bad haha.

really go through the wiring harness corrosion ect can cause odd things like these to happen check any splices connectors ect. have seen same type issue multiple times and ussually leads to a corroded splice for a sensor or power to ecu

Title: Re: 92 toyota
Post by: fasteddie on January 25, 2013, 10:22:55 PM
which leads to another possible solution when the truck shuts off do you loose interior lights radio ect? or does  just the engine shut off? if you have not checked under dash could be supply issue ie ignmition switch ect... what distributor does it have? any type of ignition module other than ecu? the other thing i would do is watch the primary voltage for the coil with a meter and see if it drops when truck dies or if its loosing only secondary ign.
Title: Re: 92 toyota
Post by: fasteddie on January 25, 2013, 10:46:00 PM
also check for signs of oil inside distributor. have you checked the resistance of the pickup coil? should be 185-265 ohms . i would check as soon as it dies.
Title: Re: 92 toyota
Post by: smichaelR22 on January 28, 2013, 09:36:13 AM
it doesnt really die, it just runs like crap with no power.  Eric pulls the disconnect and then its fine for another 10 minutes
Title: Re: 92 toyota
Post by: etk300ex on January 28, 2013, 03:16:53 PM
I have done a full tune up including coil.  It has an ICM but I've yanked on all the wires and shook it, tilted it up-side-down etc and cant reproduce the issue.  I could pull the distributor out and give it a look see.
Title: Re: 92 toyota
Post by: fasteddie on January 28, 2013, 09:40:02 PM
so you have ruled out the coil rotor cap wires plugs.... i would check the air gap on the pick up coil it should be between .008-.016" do not use a magnetic feeler gague to do this if that is within spec and not covered in oil or oil residue i would replace the icu wiggling turning over ect are all good tests but the icu is all solid state from what i have read so may not get you far i think the best way to prove its failure would be to install a spark checker between the coil tower and cap and watch for the spark to weaken as the truck runs. if the spark is indeed weaking as the truck runs it would have to be caused by the icu as it is actually firing the coil and not the ecu. this running condition could also be caused by a weakening fuel pump but to me just shutting it off then resatarting should not casue it to run good if it was the fuel pump. unfortunatley there is not an actual test for the icu only to rule out all other ignition related components.
Title: Re: 92 toyota
Post by: etk300ex on August 30, 2013, 08:38:45 AM

We parked on the outer edge so we didn't infect any of the nice autos with our cooties.

This thing will idle all day long!  Maybe I can make it into a heat recovery unit for the house or something?

So..........

Got a fuel pressure gauge on at the rail, noticed it was on the low side of the range.  Checked the fuel filter and it was packed full of grim and metal shavings.  Took all the lines off and blew them out and now she runs like a top.

I've checked the filter and lines several times at original time of issue and all was clean.   New fuel cell came straight off of a drag car and looked perfectly clean when I put it on.  I guess I had overlapping issues or something...  I dont get it but extremely happy its back!  I should of checked it more often since all signs pointed to it...dumb!

Managed to break a 27 spline chromo birf with the 30% power I've been rolling around with.  Nor sure how that happened.

Sold maybe a year ago or more.  Didn't use nearly enough for the space it was taking up.
