how are you going to make that look at all descent on a daily driven XJ?
Title: Re: Bumper talk
Post by: MrMindless on March 04, 2009, 04:07:54 PM
That entirely depends on your definition of decent, I think.

why are you hating on stingers? i like them. its just something different than everyone else.

They are also good for removing rear windows on slow cars and minivans. I think i would need one a little shorter.

See link in luvmyxj\'s post for good pic of bulge fenders.

i wouldnt go with glass fender, only because you can pound dents out of metal, glasss cracks...

i like that stinger you poasted. we can make a bumper, then you can put a pre runner on yours and i can put a stinger on mine

I like stingers for hard core rock crawling, but before you go for a really big high stinger, consider the safety risk involved in daily driving. If you hit anything from the front, there a greatly improved chance that you\'ll end up flipping/rolling in the air like that unnamed cop car in a cheesy 80\'s car chase scene. There great for keeping rigs from flopping head first on steep drops, but there a lot of money to spend as well.

Post by: GTJake on March 04, 2009, 09:40:40 PM
were building it, not buying one.

i understand the risk.

I will need to see how a stinger looks before I make up my mind one way or another.

I still need to get my jeep out to my dad\'s shop so we can see what its going to take to fix it before I know what I have to work with.

Post by: GTJake on March 05, 2009, 06:11:36 PM
i think that if the stinger was larger it would be ok.,

i like the looks of a bumper thats FLAT acros the front...

Post by: fedrusion on March 05, 2009, 10:20:23 PM
Yea, I think the mix of tube and plate make it.

Custom.
Guy on the Jeep Forum was asking on people to come up with a good name for it.
here\'s the thread:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=652100

I\'d send him a whisper asking if he\'d make more, if I still had my Commanche.

Post by: GTJake on March 06, 2009, 02:00:42 PM
its too complicated for my likig. i like something alittle more simple. less tube

On a separate note, how much does it cost to build a pre-runner for a bumper?  How much is involved in doing so?

I\'d like to make something similar to this add-on pre-runner for my Rugged Ridge bumper, but one that will allow me to retain the large D-rings, and maybe not stick out so far.

I have some ideas...I\'m just not very good at drawing them up.

you might have to ask about it at a meeting
Title: Re: Bumper talk

I\'m only running a stinger because I\'m competing, otherwise I would never run one, I think they are ugly.

cora, be nice, you forgot to say \"in my opinion\" :-P
Title: Re: Bumper talk

wow, thanks for being honest.

we dont all have to agree about what looks good. you know what they say about opinions...

sorry, I thought the \'$0.02\', or the \'in my opinion\' would be obvious.
Title: Re: Bumper talk
Post by: GTJake on March 07, 2009, 11:32:58 AM
haha, its cool.

my point is that the cool thing about this sport is that you can fab up anything you like and make your rig original.
theres tons of stuff that i dont like that ive seen on peoples jeeps, but theres also some things that i realy liked. so my goal is to take pieces of the things that i like and combine them to make something that i LOVE

Jake, you thinking about building a rear bumper to.

Since this will be used for recovery we need to make sure to include strong frame tie ins and not use just the 6 stock mounting holes for the bumper.
Title: Re: Bumper talk
Post by: GTJake on March 07, 2009, 05:07:25 PM
my plan would be to make a rear too...but im not in a hurry for the rear
Title: Re: Bumper talk
Post by: microdot on March 08, 2009, 08:52:14 AM
My shrock bumper tow points are attached directly to the frame.  The bumper is welded to the tow points, not the other way (like most others) Jim makes Jeep bumpers, too.

i like how the rear turns the corner. looks cool
Title: Re: Bumper talk
Post by: fedrusion on March 10, 2009, 11:30:27 AM
I think its the only bumper that requires the cut and fold on the rear qrt\'s. Its somewhere over 800 for the pair.

The big question is can we fab something that will look like this.

Title: Re: Bumper talk

unless i can\'t see them theres no real towpoints on the front or rear of that bumper, and who\'s got a tube bender.
Title: Re: Bumper talk
Post by: MrMindless on March 10, 2009, 02:08:42 PM
Cora has a bender and so does Ryan.  Tabs or rings are easy to add.

Your pretty close to me I think, I can come out and help to. I have this problem working on stuff by myself, just being able to talk with someone while you do it makes it fun. By yourself its to much like work.
